Game Creek Bridge Project Underway 

During the month of September, the trail crew has been hard at work replacing bridges and restoring trail in the Game Creek Drainage. Many of the bridges in this area were showing signs of their age by rotting and flexing. Additionally, some of the portions of Middle Game Creek Trail were aligned too close to the creek, resulting in washout and flooding in the early spring.

Last year, Friends of Pathways was awarded a grant for this project from the Recreational Trails Program through the Wyoming State Parks & Cultural Resources. This summer, the trail crew set to work pre-cutting lumber and transporting tools and lumber to the site. Once the boards were in Game Creek, the real fun could begin. Each board, weighing over 20 lbs, was transported from the top of the Game Creek Road to the bridge site. The crew had two fantastic volunteer groups to help with the project: Jackson Hole Community School students and the BTNF Fire Crew. The amount of lumber they transported for each of the bridges was impressive!

During the second week, the crew had the help of mini-x to move fill dirt for turnpikes and to carve a new trail out of the hill adjacent to the road. The higher placement of this new trail, will help to keep it dry and erosion free.

Greater Snow King Area/Munger Mountain Area/Teton Pass Area

All Greater Snow King Area, Munger Mountain, and Teton Pass Area trails are now open and riding well. Last week the FOP trail crew removed several trees from the last wind storm and replaced the kiosks at the top of Teton Pass. This week a volunteer group from the JH Community School will be helping do a small reroute at the bottom of Josie’s Ridge to bypass the most eroded, trenched section. This should not affect trail users. 

Last week the FS crew worked on the middle fork of Ditch Creek, clearing and improving washed out sections of trail.

Greater Snow King Area/Munger Mountain Area/Teton Pass Area

All Greater Snow King Area, Munger Mountain, and Teton Pass Area trails are now open and riding well. The FOP trail crew worked with volunteers from City Kids and the University of Wyoming to fix a turnpike on the Hagen Trail and to make a reroute on the KC Trail. Note: the KC reroute is not yet open. The crew also spent time berming corners on the bottom of the Ridge Trail and took care of downed trees in Game Creek, Phillips Canyon, and the Fuzzy Bunny Trail.
The FS crew worked on clearing Wolf Creek, Ditch Creek, and the Highline trail all the way from Granite Hot Springs to Cache Creek. 

The Silver Star work on Teton Pass continues to progress: they are already below Crater Lake and moving down Old Pass Road. Heavy equipment remains on Old Pass Road during this project. To ensure public safety, temporary trail closures will be in place where machinery is working. To read the entire press release, click here.

Friends of Pathways and the Forest Service have trail crews out on the systems daily, working hard on trail maintenance and construction. Friends of Pathways also works with Jackson Hole Community Pathways and Teton County Parks and Recreation to ensure pathways are swept and safe.

Trail Report, August 1oth, 2011
Greater Snow King Area/Munger Mountain Area/Teton Pass Area

All Greater Snow King Area, Munger Mountain, and Teton Pass Area trails are now open and riding well after some much-needed rain last week. There have been several downed trees due to high winds, which the trail ambassadors were able to (mostly) clear this weekend. 

Last week the FS crew worked with a Wilderness Ventures group clearing the Dog Creek to Little Dog Creek loop.

The FOP crew worked on completing two new sections of trail: one at the bottom of Phillips Ridge, with the help of several volunteer groups, and the other a connector trail from the Pine Glades development to Sink or Swim, which trail crews are hoping to call the “Shade Monkey Trail.” This trail was made with a mini excavator that narrowed down to 3 feet wide, providing 2,244’ of shaded single track. Both of these new sections should be finished this week.

The TFR crew has finished some work on the upper Fuzzy Bunny trail including some new road gap jumps.

Crews and volunteers are working hard daily, addressing problem areas first and then moving to trail improvements as needed. Please be patient, send in your observations, and come out and help - Friday AM’s have now moved to the Teton Pass Area (meet at the Stagecoach at 8am).

Possible Old Pass Road Closures
Silver Star Communications began work this week to install fiber optic cable along the Old Pass Road. This work is park of a larger project to install approximately 100 miles of high-speed fiber optic cable to improve connectivity of broadband service across Wyoming. The work along Old Pass Road will help complete a key loop for this project. Heavy equipment will be on Old Pass Road during the project, which is expected to take about two weeks. Pathways Report, August 10th, 2011

The 2011 Sealcoating project began last week. Crews will be patching asphalt and following up with sealcoating the pathways over the next couple weeks on the following sections: School Pathways between Gregory Lane and Middle School Road, Cottonwood Pathways, Von Gontard Pathway (south of Melody), and the Spring Gulch (JH Golf and Tennis) Pathway. 

Pathways should be open to use during the asphalt patching work, but users should follow instructions from work crews and pay attention to regulatory warning signs. During the sealcoating work, sections of pathway will be closed temporarily.

County Begins Work on South Park Loop Bridges, Road Closure near Melody Ranch
On August 15th, Teton County will begin construction work to replace the existing South Park Loop Road Bridge over Flat Creek near Melody Ranch. This project will require closure of the South Park Loop Road in the vicinity of Melody Ranch for the entire 4-month construction period. Concurrent with the road bridge project, the County will also begin construction of a new pathway bridge over Flat Creek adjacent to South Park Loop Road. The bridges will be operational and South Park Loop Road will re-open by mid-December. To read the complete press release, click here.

Pathways are mult-directional, multi-use, and walkers, runners, cyclists, rollers, and skaters all have the same rights and responsibilities while using these amenities. Please announce yourself from behind when overtaking other users, yield to the younger and more inexperienced, stay to the right, and always remember to pick up after your dogs! Additionally, please remember that on Town pathways, dogs are required to be on a leash – not just under voice control.’

July 20th Report & Project Updates

Below you will find today’s trails and pathways report for Jackson Hole. Trail Report, July 20, 2011
Greater Snow King Area/Munger Mountain Area/Teton Pass Area

All Greater Snow King Area, Munger Mountain, and Teton Pass Area trails are now open. Seasonal maintenance continues. 

Arrow to Phillips is rideable and 99% snow free, but do be aware of the trench near the creek crossing at the bottom where the high water caused damage. Blacks is now snow free; the Ridge Trail is riding well as are the lower downhill trails. The Jumps Trail reroute is finished and the Teton Freedom Riders - as part of the JH Trails Project - are working on the bottom part of the Fuzzy Bunny Trail, which is closed halfway down during construction.

Trails Projects, Summer 2011:

  • Wiggle (GSKA) - Complete for the season.
  • Cache Creek Sidewalk - Complete for the season.
  • Hage Reroute, Bridge 4&5 - Complete for the season.
  • Turnpike repair to be completed this season on Hagen between Bridge 3-4, Salt Lick Draw and Gin Pole Draw on Putt-Putt. These projects will be completed in mid-August.
  • Game Creek - Almost 200 hours have been spent on GC in an attempt to restore the trail and remove the water. Work is complete for the season.
  • Phillips Ridge Trail - Work is just starting on maintenance. Folks should note that parts of this project are less than a year ld and work will continue.
  • Phillips Canyon - Crews will be in there for the remainder of the season to complete sight distance, tread widening, fall zone and two to three bridges.
  • Blacks is cleared, work will be forth coming and will continue for the season.
  • Powerline Jump Trail will be finished this week and should be open and good to go very soon.
  • Kiosks - Crews are in the process of building six new kiosks for the Teton Pass and Greater Snow King Areas. This will take the rest of July.
  • Ski Lake is getting a face lift; 12 workers will be in there for the week.
  • Tunnel Trail - scheduled to be started on August 1st, with machinery. This project is estimated to take two weeks and should be open September 1st.

Pathways Report, July 20, 2011
Pathways will be installing a “pathway travel lane” for users on the North 89 pathway south of the Fish Hatchery Road. There is an unfinished section of pathway just south of the Fish Hatchery, and pathway users are required to use the highway shoulder between the completed sections. Traffic delineators will be placed on the shoulder to separate pathway users from motor vehicles. The “travel lane” will be in place until the pathway is completed later this summer.

Routine seasonal maintenance on pathways continues. TC Parks & Rec has been focusing on weekly sweeping, sightline improvements (branch and hedge trimming), and trimming around safety signage. Fortunately, only minor flooding was seen in limited areas, and warning signs are up on those pathways. Sealcoating will begin in early August.

July 6th Report

Trail Report, July 6, 2011
Greater Snow King Area/Munger Mountain Area/Teton Pass Area
Last week Friends of Pathways’ crews fixed several problem areas in Game Creek, moving the tread higher where the beaver pond had risen, and building a bridge to replace the flooded crossing just below the West Game junction. The Forest Service crew was off last week (they work 8 days on and 6 days off).

Friday Morning Volunteer Days in Cache Creek continue to be successful - thanks to all who have come out to work! With volunteer help and that of Operation Purple- a military service group from Teton Science School (pictured above) - the new “Wiggle” trail connecting the Cache Creek Sidewalk to Putt Putt is now open. It offers a great beginner loop from the Cache Creek trailhead that is approximately 3 miles long.

The Greater Snow King Area trails are all open and in good shape. There are still a few problems in West Game where reroutes are needed as well as one seeping section of the Game Creek trail that users should go around.

Munger trails are all open and rideable.

Lower trails in the Teton Pass Area are open, but mid and higher elevation trails still have many sections that remain under snow, and/or have trees down yet to be removed. The Arrow Trail is nearly snow free until the corner towards the SnoTel area where drifts persist. The Ridge Trail is drying out from the Fish Creek side and offers a nice out and back. Jimmy’s Mom is in good shape for the downhill bikers, just be advised to be cautious of up hill traffic on Old Pass Road.

Teton Freedom Riders are hard at work rebuilding the Powerline Jumps. This is not finished, but TFR encourages those interested to go over and check out the progress being made.

Notes:
Please beware of wildlife and early season conditions on all trails - carry bear spray! A cat (mountain lion) was spotted on Linda’s Trail last week. Baby moose are now appearing in the lower Teton Pass Area. Please use caution as Momma Moose may not be in the mood to deal with you or your dog.

Pathways Report, July 6, 2011
All pathways are open and in great shape! Two new bike corrals were put in place last week - one at Betty Rock and one at The Wort Hotel!
The fence on Garaman, where it comes to Gregory Lane has been fixed. Parks and Rec is sweeping the system today and tomorrow. Friday they will be focusing on the line-of-sight trimming on Hwy 390.

Pathways will remain open during construction/maintenance, but users should exercise caution when passing through construction areas. Users should remember to keep their dogs under control – dogs are required on leashes within the Town of Jackson, pick up after their dogs using mutt-mitt bags, and place the used mutt-mitt bags in the trash cans. Walkers, rollers, and riders should stay to the right, allowing two-way traffic, announce their approaches from behind, and signal all intentions, including changes of direction. Finally, please remember motorized vehicles are not permitted on the pathways.
