Tracey Riding to Targhee
Right now Fitzy team rider, Tracey Petervary, is on her bike riding just southeast of Kalispell, Montana on the Tour Divide. As of 8:30 am on Monday, June 11, she’s about 430 miles into her 2700 plus mile journey from Banff to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. Tracey’s covering about 140 miles per day riding at an average of 6 mph and is in 13th place overall.
I saw Tracey right before she headed to the start line. Her bike was clean and running great. She had her gear packed, lights full of fresh batteries, a can of bear spray nestled on her handle bars, and full water bottles. She has been logging lots of miles getting ready. She’s got serious experience in endurance racing: she’s already raced the Tour Divide on a tandem and she’s raced in Alaska many times and with success. On paper, Tracey should be full of confidence and bravado, ready to charge this race. But Tracey was nervous. This ride is going to change her and she knew it.
This week is Victor Bike Week. You can help build new trails, join the local trails and pathways organization, bike to work, race kick bikes at the Community picnic, and see a movie about inspirational journeys by bike. Seems kind of small compared to Tracey out on the trail riding for hours and hours, doesn’t it? But I don’t believe that life changing rides have to be thousands of miles long. You just have to be willing to be nervous and open to letting the bike change your life.
