The hydroformed-aluminum frame has sophisticated tube shapes that make a frame that's light and strong for a quick and efficient ride.

Trek's ingenious SpeedTrap seamlessly integrates the computer sensor into the fork to measure speed and distance with no added aerodynamic drag.
Riding your FX to work? Running errands by bike? The FX has built-in mounts that make it easy to add racks and fenders for maximum versatility.

Very good bike
Pros:
Lightweight, Comfortable, Fast, Handles Well
Cons:
Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:
Casual Riding, Exercising, Climbing
Just what I was looking for to ride on the hills on country roads in my area. I use it for exercise and keeping fit. I replaced the seat and raised the handle bar a bit to make it more comfortable. This replaces my 6 yr old 7300 hybrid which I still have. The 7.4 is light, fast and fun to ride. The components work flawlessly. Good color choices too. A good choice for someone wanting a good workout.

Great bike in lieu of a road bike
Pros:
Lightweight, Responsive, Handles Well, Good Geometry, Fast
Cons:
Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:
Exercising, Serious Training
This bike replaced a 10 year old 7.2 FX which I liked very much. The upgrade is definitely worth it, the 7.4 is much more responsive and faster. The seat, which seems to be a common malady, is uncomfortable, I kept my aftermarket seat from my previous bike and replaced the OEM seat with it after one ride.
I ride approximately 100 miles per week for maintaining physical fitness, the 7.4 was an excellent choice for me.

Very Good Casual/Commuter Bike
Pros:
Responsive, Handles Well, Good Geometry
Cons:
Poor Components
Best Uses:
Exercising, Casual Riding, Commuting
I take my bike out once a week for a 60-70 km ride. With the many hills in the city I live in, I greatly appreciate the inner chainring and low gears combined with the 700x32 tires. Nevertheless, considering the price tag of the FX in comparison with others in the market, a higher model crank, shifter and front derailleur (i.e. deore instead of acera) would have made this bike better.
Other than this, more effort in making less noticable welding for the looks and a more comfortable seat would better satisfy the user profile of a bike as such.
I would highly recommend this bike for all casual and commuting riders expecting something between a mountain and road bike. It performs on almost all surfaces except exreme forest / mountains and thus will meet your expectations in this regard. With the carbon-fork upgrade from the 7.3 (you will get less noise off the road) and a downgrade from the 2 chainring 7.5 (as I'm not the 'all performance' person :), I believe the 7.4 is the optimal model in this series (price / performance wise) for anyone like myself.

Pros:

Cons:

Great bike at a great price. Put a child seat on the back for my toddler to ride along with no problem. For trips to the market, a handlebar basket won't work, I put one on there and it totally scratched up the paint which was disappointing. Ended up just putting a handlebar bag off the front and getting a basket for the back (when my kid isn't there). The ergo grips are super comfortable. Really happy with this bike.

Pros:

Cons:
A Tad On The Heavy Side
Best Uses:

Had my Trek for almost a month. Just got back from a 30 mile morning. It was a great ride. Went out with friends who all had lighter weight road bikes. I felt like I was struggling to keep up with my heavier bike. It was my first time out with a group. I'm thinking of up-grading already to a lighter bike, especially if I'm going to hang with the big guns..
The bike gets a lot of compliments! It really is a great looking bike and it's a smooth shifting ride. It's nice belonging to the Trek family:)

Great Bike at a Great Price
Pros:
Fast, Comfortable, Lightweight, Good Geometry
Cons:
Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:
Commuting, Exercising, Casual Riding
I purchased this bike the replace a Trek 7100 because my riding preferences had evolved. I could not be happier with this purchase. This bike rolls at a quick speed with very little effort and it shifts very smoothly. I immediately shaved off minutes from my daily commute to work. I realize there are lighter bikes out there but my old bike is like a tank compared to this lightweight.
I did replace the saddle almost immediately after purchasing this bike. I'm not saying the stock saddle is bad, I just believe the saddle is one of, if not the most, important component of your bike. Nobody's body is the same so you should purchase a saddle that fits you perfectly. I also equipped the bike with Shimano SPD pedals. Other than that, this bike is near perfect for this price range.
Buy this bike. You will not regret it.

Nice Bike
Pros:
Handles Well, Lightweight, Responsive
Cons:
Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:
Casual Riding, Exercising
Use it mainly for riding paths paved with gravel and cinders and sometimes on rural roads. Replaces my 10 year old 7.3 fx which served me well and I appreciate the carbon fiber fork which absorbs rough surfaces nicely. LBS fitted the bike with 700x35 tires with a tread more suitable for my kind of riding. Flexible gear ranges make it easy to climb hills. Good workmanship and having hidden cables is a nice plus.
The seat is less comfortable than my old 7.3fx which was not very good to begin with.

Excellent bike. It is smooth and the gears are flawless. The dealer put on 28 mm Continental road tires and they are very nice. Bike is highly stylish with the silver, grey, and red trim. The brakes seem to need adjustment frequently, and that is the only issue I have--the pads seem to be low quality.

A great mix of road and trail
Pros:
Handles Well, Lightweight
Cons:
Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:

I am getting back into cycling after a long absence. This seemed like a great way to get back in. Enjoy the performance and the way the bike handles. The standard seat is very uncomfortable and all but useless. it would seem that with the current tech out there better materials could be used. Also this is a pricey bike, make seat choices part of the cost. the seat is my big complaint. Otherwise I love this bike.
I am 73 and just back into riding after a long time. My local Trek store added a longer stem to raise the handlebars to help with numbness is my hands. That along with padded gloves seems to have done the trick. It is now a very comfortable ride.

Couldn't Be Better
Pros:
Responsive, Handles Well, Comfortable, Fast
Cons:
Brakes Could Be Better
Best Uses:
Exercising, Commuting, Serious Training
Perfect bike for getting into shape and riding everyday. I kitted mine out with some clipless pedals and took it's speed to a whole other level. I absolutely love this bike. The carbon fork smooths every little bump out. I added some bar ends for power climbing hills. the duo trap sense combined with my Trip 300 computer makes riding an interactive event that has helped keep track of my fitness goals.
I get stopped all the time with people asking about the bike and saying how good it looks.
Good Geometry, Handles Well, Lightweight, Comfortable, Great value
Cons:
Welds Not Smooth
Best Uses:
Exercising, Casual Riding
I bought this bike to replace my 7 year old Trek SOHO that had over 25,000 miles on it. That was a great bike so again I went with Trek. So far I have 1,500 miles on my FX 7.4 and I absolutely love it.
This bike frame geometry is very comfortable but the welds are not smooth like on my Trek One Series. There are fender mounts on the frame and fork so I installed Bontrager fenders for riding in the rain. It's really easy to do.
The components are great. You get a Shimano rear hub and a Formula front hub. The wheels, I believe, are double walled and tubeless ready. They are strong; I've done a lot of city riding and they're still true. Also, the shifting components are all Shimano. The tires are excellent quality Bontrager hard case. Lastly, the brakes are Tekro direct pulls. But, don't expect them to stop as good as disk brakes. I prefer these brakes over disk (my SOHO had disks)because they're lighter, simpler to maintain and adjust, and easier to remove the wheels.
Usually the first think I do when I get a new bike is change the seat and grips. However, this bike has excellent grips (flat with gel cushion)am a very good seat. So, I didn't have to replace either one.
Overall, this is a great bike and a great value. I don't think you'll find anything as close as good for the price range. Also, Trek is not a licensed off brand name. Their own engineers and designers design all of the bike. I think that's why there are so great. My friends have bought those other licensed brand bike and they just not as well made or durable.
After making a 4-hour commute by car daily for 3+ years, getting onto this bike for my 10-mile ride to the train station and back is a sincere pleasure.Just completed my first 100-mile week doing it and I'm looking forward to the next. Although still a bit hard on the tuches, this bike handles extremely well.
I absolutely love this bike. I'm a heavy set guy 300+ so I did quite a bit of research before ending up with the Trek 7.4 FX in crystal white. I knew I wanted the FX line for a while but I was deciding between this and the 7.3. I took both for test rides. As a heavy dude, the carbon fork makes a huge difference in the smoothness of the ride. I could tell immediately, especially on the bumps of sidewalks, how much more smooth the carbon fork is. Personally I couldn't tell the difference in the components between the two, and the frame design is identical, but the carbon fork made it totally worth it. This bike is extremely customizable, has tons of mounting holes for anything you could want, as well as the blendr mount at the front stem, which works great for the front light. Be careful removing the caps in the mounting holes, They're tight and I ripped the top of one off. I had to use a drill to get it out.
PROs of the bike: it rides comfortably, yet is fast. I love the aggressive stance it has for a hybrid, and you can push yourself hard if you want, or can simply have a joy ride. The cables are housed through the frame which is awesome for the longevity of the bike and looks clean. Its lightweight, I have the biggest frame size and I still can't believe how light it is. It is an extremely well built, sturdy bike. I can without a doubt get 10+ years out of this thing (with proper maintenance of course). The wheels are lightweight. The tires are responsive to the road, but are a good in between size for comfort riding.
CONS (mild complaints): The tires are Tubeless Ready Bontrager wheel/tire, which means that they are not Tubeless, but have the capability of being tubeless with additional purchases. They also have Presta valves, these are not your standard car tire valves. While the Prestas look cool and unique, I prefer the universality of the Schrader valves (you can just go to a gas station to pump up those tires but you cant with the Presta valves). The seat is a bit uncomfortable, its not awful by any means though. I've gone on 14 mile rides (a lot for me) and have only had mild discomfort in the groin area and NO rashes from seat rub...that is a great success in my book. Make sure you play with the seat angle and your seatpost height before you totally swap it out, it might be "good enough" for you. I had to do some adjustments to the front derailleur when I got my bike to avoid chain rub, but that is more an LBS issue and something anyone can do with a little bit of research. If you're not familiar with that and you see and hear your chain clicking, just take it back to your LBS and have them adjust it for free.
OVERALL: This is a fantastic bike for commuters, fitness riders, and high speed errand runners. It is a reliable city bike with an aggressive enough stance to get around, but safe enough upright position to see and respond to your surroundings. The 2015 version is worth buying the bike new, with the redesigned slick frame and the cables that run through the bike to make it look clean. I haven't had too much time with it but I can already tell that it will be reliable and durable for a long time.

This is the sweet spot in the FX line up
Pros:
Handles Well, Responsive, Good Geometry, Comfortable
Cons:
Handlebar
Best Uses:
Commuting, Fitness
I turned from a casual cyclists (riding since a very young age and then later with kids when they were yonger) to more of an avid cyclist. I picked up the '14 7.4 FX after experiencing a previously owned 2006 7.3 FX. There is a significant difference. I love the 7.4, it is lighter, feels more solid, has better components, and better technology. My only grip is that the handlebar feels cheap. The bar is the proprietary Trek ISOzone. The ISOZone grips are NOT bad but the bar is strange! The seat is OK but not great. I had an older H1 (with white markings) on the 7.3. The new H1 feels different...not as combfortable.
The components on the 7.4 are great. I use dual sided Shimano pedals and Ergon grips. Handlebar will be changed out. Add a rear rack, bag, and some lights...you have a nice ride!

I'm SO glad I got this 7.4! I was looking at other models and makes, including the 7.2, which is nice as well. I'm new cycling, so I have no reference point, but it seems to me that the few nicer features like the carbon fork, better tires and gearing are worth it. I don't think I need to upgrade, unless I get really serious about cycling. For now, my goal is just to cross-train with running to train for a half marathon.
I'm an old fat guy with a fused ankle that is enjoying getting fit at age 60. Cycling will be easier on my body than running. Getting a good quality bike like this Trek makes sense. I seems to me that riding experience is more enjoyable with a good bike. I don't skimp on my running shoes and I'm glad I didn't skimp on this bike.

Nice Ride!
Pros:
Handles Well, Lightweight, Good Geometry, Fast, Responsive
Cons:
Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:
Exercising, Casual Riding
After my test ride, I changed the saddle with a Bontrager Commuter Gel CRZ+ before leaving the bike shop. After taking the bike home, I upgraded the front derailleur and shifters to Shimano Deore components to match the stock Deore rear derailleur. This is a nice bike, but for the price, I was disappointed that it wasn't equipped with matching Deore components, and a more comfortable saddle.
I use this bike mainly for exercise. We have a 30 mile loop in our town that is basically all paved. This bike is perfect for this kind of riding (I am in my 50s). I went on a three day bike trip last year (rail-bed trail) and the bike performed well (including thirty pounds of gear). Planning to get a different set of tires for crushed-limestone trails, the stock tires a little iffy when the trail was wet and the bike was loaded up, although I never lost control. The IsoZone handle bars are very comfortable, and I find the carbon forks are better than my old bike, which had front shocks. I did add some bar extenders, which were only 40 bucks installed, highly recommended. The seat is not the greatest, and I've already wore through my brake pads, which is a little disappointing. But overall this bike is great, very smooth and rides well.

This is a light well constructed bike that handles beautifully. It shifts easily and the grips are extremely comfortable. The light aluminum frame with carbon forks make for a smooth and enjoyable ride whether on or off rode. The only down side is the seat which is exremely hard and uncomfortable. Otherwise this is a GREAT bike.

Just some background...I am recovering after being on disability for the last 2 1/2 years. I was bedridden for the majority of that time. So this was a huge milestone in my recovery and I wanted to find a nice, quality bike, that was designed for fitness, to treat myself. So, I figured the 7.4 FX would perfect for me to get started. It has plenty of gears to work up to, it's light (compared to what I have owned before), it handles great, has nice grips, nice hard-case tires(I now have h5 hard-case tires), rides quietly and smoothly and you can just feel the quality compared to cheaper brands. I am not a professional cyclist by any means... I did ride a bike growing up almost everyday for 8 years, so I am no stranger to riding a bike. My first nice bike was redline when I was about 11 or 12 years old. Before that I had department store brand bikes. My bike before this was a Jamis Trail x bike. This 7.4 FX is much more suitable for me. I did have some concerns that the Trek dealer in [...] helped me with. The race tires were too hard for the kind of road (tar and chip) that I live on right now, so they switched them with H5's. Also, the seat was as hard as a brick, which they swapped out for me. They also swapped out the stem for me to help to adjust it. More recently I have noticed some noise from the drivetrain or pedals (not sure which) when I apply pressure when pedaling hard, especially in the higher gears. It sounds like clicking and rattling. They do a free tune-up between 30-90 days so maybe they can check it out then.I only have 20 miles on it so I will update this review in the coming months if anything changes. They said things need to be adjusted once they break in a bit. I am sure they will fix or adjust anything at that time. All in all, I am thoroughly impressed with this bike. My mom is also very satisfied with her bike (she bought a 7100 WSD). Between the great service at the dealer and the fantastic product Trek offers, I will be a loyal Trek owner for years to come. I would definitely recommend this bike or Trek, in general, to a friend or relative.

So far, so good!
Pros:
Lightweight, Versatile, Durable, Dependable
Cons:
Best Uses:
Commuting/City, Exercise
I haven't been on a bike in at least 10 years, but after moving to Chicago, I knew it was time. I went back and forth within the Trek FX series as it fit most of my needs (communiting, visiting friends around town and a means of exercise) and after going back and forth with the 7.3 and 7.4, I went with the 7.4 and am very happy. Not only is it a fantastic looking bike, it's been so easy to ride. It's lightweight with excellent components. I'd HIGHLY recommend this bike to anyone. (I was in the $400-$600 range when I first started looking, but this bike has completely justifited the $739 price tag)
