This week we’re putting the spotlight on Dave Bergart (and, no, not everyone on the team is named Dave) who has been on the Fitzgerald’s Bicycles team since the beginning. Dave is an important part of Victor Velo, a group dedicated to promoting the economic development of Victor, Idaho through providing robust cycling opportunities. Called Bergie by his teammates, I chatted with him about why he loves the Run & Ride, his obsession with Ok Go and trying out LOTOJA on a tandem.
SAG = Service and Gear
Admit it, you’ve been on a long ride, reached down to gulp a drink only to find your bottle empty and then spent the next 30 minutes day dreaming about raising your hand to wave forward the team car to bring you a cold drink….
We’ve all been there.
Jay does it all: top-notch bike fitting, guiding trips for our travel/guide service The Bike Tender, coffee guru (ask him to make you a Cortado), and, oh yeah, the dude can ride…from last year’s record setting No Idle Tour, to winning the first Stagecoach 400 in Southern California this spring … Jay is one of the top endurance & adventure cyclists in the country.
Jay took a moment to speak to me about it all:
Jay explained why he enjoys bike fitting, “With bike fitting, I feel like I can help my clients fix problems that are holding them back from riding. When I see them after a fit session out on their bikes, I like knowing that I helped them.”
“Guiding clients for The Bike Tender is an extension of fitting in a way because I can spend time with a client on their bike. It gives me the opportunity to help clients improve their riding technique and it gets me out on my bike, which I love,” Jay says.
“This year I am stepping back a bit from the riding I did last year with the No Idle Tour. ” Jay said of his racing schedule. But that doesn’t mean Jay isn’t getting after it. “I plan on doing a 200 single track mile race in St. George, Utah on my birthday. I have also never ridden the Pierre’s Hole and I plan on riding that.” Jay normally travels for his long races, but this summer he looks forward to exploring around Teton Valley and the surrounding areas to learn about what our area really has to offer. This includes riding the Fitz-Barn Ride later in the summer.
Call 208-787-2453 to schedule an appointment with Jay for a new or existing bike fit. Or chat with him about how The Bike Tender could support your next big ride.
The shop’s youngest staff member, Braden, has been riding for just a couple of months now. Which, considering he turned two just this month, is pretty impressive.
How did he get his start? A Strider.
I talked with Jannine about why a Strider:
Did you know that Fitzgerald’s sponsors (along with Kate’s Real Foods, Snake River Brewing, Athlete 360 and Orthopaedic Associates of Jackson Hole) a cycling team? And our team races everything - road, mountain, snow bike, ultra endurance, 24-hour & 12-hour races, LOTOJA - you name and our team has ridden it. We’ve decided to highlight our team this summer and we’re going to start with one of our team managers, Dave Byers. Dave just set a personal record down at 12 Hours of Mesa Verde finishing a solid 7th in the Men’s Single Speed Solo division. Dave took a few minutes to talk about his favorite rides, the Victor Emporium milk shakes and Ergon grips:
Thanks to everyone who came out for our Grand Opening & 10th Anniversary Party.
We had a great time meeting all our new neighbors, seeing old friends, chowing down on Bill Boney’s BBQ, and throwing back a few cold ones from Snake River Brewery and Grand Teton Brewery.
Also a big thank you goes to our Fitzgerald Team Members Chris, Dan, Melissa and Kim who helped tend the bar and David Hudacsko for the help with the sound system.
