I got this bike as a graduation gift, and I love it! Although I occasionally use it for short rides on the road, I usually use it for recreational use in state parks. I've found that it handles very well both off-road and on-road. When I'm on the road or on paved trails, I can barely feel the gears shift. Off-road, I can feel the shift, but only a little. Even on the trails, the gear shifting is fluid and effortless as long as I keep the chain lubricated. The hydraulic brakes are great! The mechanisms are very smooth, and they make it much easier to stay in control going downhill. They were definitely worth the extra money since I use the bike for off-road riding. I love the way this bike handles; it's just pleasant to ride. Another reviewer mentioned that the bike is heavy, but I don't find it to be an issue for me at all. My main issue is that the tires don't provide optimal traction in some conditions. On really rough trails, they have a tendency to slide a little when I brake. This may have to do with the fact that I'm off-balance, but it does slow me down. However, as it is, these tires don't slow me down too much on the road, so it's a good thing for now since I'm using it for that purpose. Another issue is the fork, which isn't of the best quality possible considering the price I paid for the bike. I'll probably end up replacing it eventually, but it serves its purpose for now. Despite these details, I'm very satisfied with my purchase. It's a comfortable bike; I can ride all day without getting my butt getting sore the next day, which is one thing I've never experienced before. It's a great recreational bicycle, and I'm sure it's one I'll have for quite awhile.

Bike does get heavy use, but the brakes fade fast. They need bleeding that is difficult, and bleed kits are nearly impossible to come by. It's a shame Trek did not stick with the Shimano that the mens 4 series have. It would have been worth an added expense for the consumer.

I have bought this bike for my teenage daughter. As with all teenagers, form/color is more important than actual features and she LOVES her bike. That's good! Unfortunately, the Skye frame is so heavy that it is debilitating and limiting it's use. It's about 2x as heavy as my 29er 19" frame MTN bike, no kidding. It is going to be tough or impossible for her to move this bike up any incline. I expect this heavy frames at your local discounter's $100 bike, not on a $600+ Trek. On the positive side, the bike does ride and shift very smooth, there is something satisfying about riding it. The front fork is OKish, could be better too at this price-point. Due to weight, I predict that I will have to buy her another, lighter bike soon. I feel let down by Trek.

The price is super reasonable. I also enjoy just the look of it, because of the color (eeepppppp!!!). The speed is fantastic. It is just missing a little something... maybe a matching bell? I am not sure, just brainstorming. Ok, well thanks. C U!!!(not really) from, nobody

First mountain bike in a long time and I love it... I'm a newbie to riding and wanted a bike I could learn and grow into without having to transistion to a new bike in a year. This is my first trek bike and I love it. Before I thought all bikes were created equal, but I was wrong. Originally I was looking at the 820, but the adjustable shock on the front and disc breaks pushed me over to the skye and I don't regret it.
