Trek Superfly 20

Bought this for my hard-charging five year-old son. He had been riding a two-wheel bike (minus training wheels) like a madman since he was three. He gives me a mini heart-attack every time he charges down the big hill at the local bmx bike park on his beat-up/used Specialized Hotrock. His new thing is going "OFF-ROAD!!!!" on the local trails with my husband. He always yells out a warning on the uphill sections of our family rides that he's taking a hill and it's harder for him to go up the hill so we have to be patient with him. Haha! I figured it was good time to get him a proper mountain bike, so I researched the heck out of bikes to find him a really nice one. You're only young once, so I figured I might as well indulge his good passions in hopes that it inspires him to really enjoy and love the world around him. Being a lightweight kid (Always in the lower single-digit percentile of his age group), I tried to choose a sensibly-priced lightweight bike. Speaking from experience (as a flyweight myself), it simply is nicer to learn how to master a skill when you're not too busy trying to wrestle a beast in the process. Yes, this is an expensive bike, but I realized a long time ago that you tend to get what you pay for. This bike is LIGHT! The guys at the bike shop were stoked at how light it was when they weighed it (per the guy there, it was a 16lb bike). My child fell in love with the bike at first sight... and he's been biking like crazy ever since. We still have him use the smaller Hotrock at the park, but he takes this bike offroad every chance he gets. In less than a month, the tires already needed a patching up from the "pokeys" on his offroad rides. Having three boys, hopefully this bike survives being passed down through the ranks of brotherly ownership...

My 7 year old took to this bike right away when we went to look at it at the shop. On his test rides he stayed in one gear, and after we got home on his first rides it became obvious he couldn't operate the shifter because it took too much strength. I had it replace with lever shifters at the shop, which added a bit more than 10% to the overall price. The lever shifters are MUCH easier for him.

Pretty great bike for a 6 year old, the only issue so far has been the tyres which seem to be a magnet for 3 corner jacks. (5 in the first two weeks) Upgraded with heavier tyres plus slime tubes which seems to have stopped it so far.

I bought the bike for my six year old grandson. I did a lot of research for two months prior to ordering the bike. One bike web site rated the Superbly 20 as the top pick for bikes in this size for kids. I showed it to him on you tube and he immediately fell in love with it. He was not disappointed and neither was I. He got on and took off and was changing a gear by the end of the first hour. The next day he was going from 1 to 6. A really fast bike. He did three triathlons this year on a Trek Jet 16. He is really pumped to use this bike for next year triathlons. A really cool red bike and have nothing but positive feedback.

We bought this from our local bike shop for my six-year-old at Christmas time. The good: This is a light aluminum frame that is well balanced - it is far superior to many of the steel heavyweights out there. The Superfly 20 has a stem and handlebar that can be adjusted or swapped out to fit your child, and the seat is of good quality for a kids bike. The wheels seem to roll well, and the tires are good for a variety of surfaces. Overall, my son LOVES this bike, and he is out there taking on the local trails with confidence. The bad: TREK, PAY ATTENTION! 1) The crank arms are far too large for the size of child who should be on this bike. We swapped out the crank for the two-pedal-hole version found on the MT60, and moved the pedals to the inner position; a good fix, but not cheap, as this was done a couple weeks after the purchase at our expense. 2) The force needed to make the shift from second to first gear (up to the biggest/easiest cog on back) is ridiculous - I think it's hard, much less my six-year-old. It's nearly impossible for the weaker grip of a child to make the shift into first gear when needed in a dicey situation on the trail. There needs to be a better solution there. Perhaps a higher quality shifter/derailleur combo is in order? Overall, this is a great bike, and my son can flat-out fly on it. I would absolutely recommend it with this caveat: if you buy it, insist that the bike shop swap out the crank for the adjustable one and put the pedals at the 120mm length so your kid doesn't eat his knees on every pedalstroke.

I got this for my son, who is 5 years old, almost 6. He's 49" tall and very light, about 50lbs. He was very nervous at first coming from a toddler's 16" bike, but this bike is very light and fast. He adjusted after just one riding session and he is so fast now. I had the dealer install a water bottle cage, kickstand and bell you might want to do the same. He's not quite ready to change gears, so we keep in the middle gear. He loves how responsive the brakes are and how fast he can go while still being stable. This is an amazing kids bike!

Since upgrading from a heavy, single speed, 16" wheels bike, my kid needed some time to get familiar with the twist gear shifter and hand breaks on this bike. Now she loves it and is very proud of her newly developed climbing skills. She thinks it is the great looking bike and wants to ride it to school regularly. This bike is light and has very good tyres for on-track as well as light off-track rides around a park. I would recommend Trek Superfly 20 to everyone.
