Description

Trek designer Gary Fisher helped start our beloved sport on a singlespeed some 30 years ago. Trek's Rig is the natural extension of that bike, with an Alpha Gold aluminum frame boasting Gary's G2 geometry plus a 100mm-travel RockShox fork. You also get a fine selection of components. For speed and flow, the Truvativ cranks and Bontrager bars let you power the smooth-rolling Bontrager 29er wheels up and over steep undulations in the trail. And to slow the Rig down, there are powerful Avid discs plus Bontrager tires keeping you in control. You'll also love the sweet Bontrager seat and post.

Features & Info

G2 Geometry

Trek's G2 Geometry (version 2 of Gary Fisher's Genesis Geometry) delivers the ultimate ride for every trail. Genesis earned rave reviews for awesome handling on climbs and descents thanks to a long top tube paired with a short stem that moves the front wheel forward for top-notch confidence and control, while short chainstays add phenomenal traction. G2 Geometry takes these handling traits to the next level by boosting control on tight singletrack and technical climbs, too. This is accomplished by increasing the amount of fork offset (reducing trail), which makes G2 bikes steer more quickly, and by shortening the reach, which puts more weight on the front wheel for even better control and confidence. The two animations above showcase how G2 Geometry provides the perfect ride.

Backup bike turned into favorite bike!

Pros:
Cross Country Singletrak, Light, Quiet On Trails, Good gearing, Good Deal On Leftover, Handles great, Avid Juicy 3 Brakes, Fox Fork Is Amazing
Cons:
Cheap Hardware, My Bars Were Defective
Best Uses:
I have been mountain biking 2 seasons. I bought a used Trek Cobia and bought this as a backup bike after seeing it on clearance. I hate hearing the chain bouncing off the chain stay on my Cobia. Oobvuously not an issue with the Rig. It is so quiet! The Fox fork is simply amazing compared to my Rock Shop Recon silver. I paid just over $1100 for the bike and the shock retails for close to $800! No brainer. I am now looking to upgrade my Cobia shock! I was a little worried about the dropouts after researching the bike, but the number of complaints seemed few considering the amount of sales s I took a chance. I went over the bike upon delivery and cranked down on the rear dropouts and immediately stripped the Allen heads on the cheap bolts. I replaced them. With stainless and so far no unwanted moment after 30 miles of riding some very challenging terrain, jumping log overs etc. Oddly my bontrager bars are not formed properly. A quick trip to the shop and they agreed and began the warranty process on them. The original tires quite honestly are a joke and were the first thing I upgraded. Aside from that this bike is quite capable right out of the box.

What an experience!

Pros:
Good Geometry
Cons:
Poor Tires, Dropouts Move, Uncomfortable Seat, Fox Fork Oil Migrates, Rear Wheel Needs Truing, Poor Components
Best Uses:
Frame Is Sitting In A Box
I liked the frame geo an fit, it was comfortable and fun to ride. Then after a few weeks the rear wheel kept moving. There are some many threads on MTBR about this problem so won't repeat, I'll just say that it was a total buzz kill made the bike useless. You think you are getting a deal until you notice that the wheels need frequent truing because they are soo poor, crankset wears out quickly, saddle is torture, the tires are an absolute joke...Well, you can count on the fox fork, right? Wrong!! Fork has a design flaw with the foam ring below the air piston, oil migrates into the air chamber--all of it! Another long thread on this on MTBR. This bike wins for most negative posts about frame and components on MTBR, I can't believe they still find suckers to buy this bike. I would not recommend this or Trek, or the LBS where I purchased this because they never heard or know of any problems--to anyone. It is experiences like this that drive customers to buy bikes online. easily the worst bike and worst buying and service experience in my 20 years riding mountain bikes.

A solid single speed

Pros:
Good Geometry, Handles Well, Lightweight
Cons:
Best Uses:
Single Track
Sometimes you just want a simple worry-free ride. The Rig does that and more. I might suggest the 29-2 tires for a bit more grip but otherwise I have a blast with my Rig.

SS is the way to go!

Pros:
Good Geometry, Comfortable, Handles Well
Cons:
Best Uses:
Trail Riding, Single Track, Climbing
Bought the 2012 model in February and have put almost 1000 mi on it. In one word "capable". This is a great bike for building muscle, increasing fitness, and improving climbing technical sections (no downshifting!). It's hard to believe that a bike this simple can be so much fun to ride. It is quiet, and requires little maintenance besides lubing the chain every few rides, and checking the chain tension. The brakes work fine for me, and the gearing is just right; I may change the rear cog to 20 just to be able to climb more of the steep hills around here. There have been comments regarding the chain tensioning, however, I have not experienced any of these problems. I am a lighter rider (5'8" 150lb), so maybe this has something to do with it? I would just recommend focus on spinning instead of pounding on the pedals. I have added carbon bars and seat post, and will be going tubeless soon. The bike weighs 25lb. I also have a Rumblefish, and this Rig is the real head turner because it's SS.

Good value with a few weaknesses

Pros:
Fox fork price point
Cons:
Rear wheel chainhdst
Best Uses:
Single Track
Bought my 2012 (black one) four months ago and have ridden it about twice a week on local rocky single track and some weekend outings. Mostly a great bike. Here is where I save you some trouble on the trail. The chain is junk and stretched every other ride until it got a weird twist in it that was not due to anything but a defect. Replace the chain and save yourself time. The rear wheel has broken six spokes on the drive side so far. They break at the nipples. I am taking it to my lbs to replace the rim with a non-as symmetric and butted spokes today. I am 190lbs and only the drive side spokes have broken. The headset was replaced by the lbs before I even got the bike - some defect they said. The cane creek they put on has been fine. Aside from those issues the bike has been great. Every bike has weaknesses, the above fairly minor ones are what I have found with this one so far.

First 29er SS

Pros:
Good Geometry, Durable, Comfortable, Handles Well
Cons:
Poor Tires, Poor Components
Best Uses:
Single Track, Trail Riding
I love this bike for training and rolling singletrack. The first thing I did was get rid of the handlebars and wheels. The tires are a little cheap and the rear hub continually loosened up on me. The brakes are okay. I love the Fox fork and the cranks. For this pricepoint, I expected a little more in the components. I just bought a competing company's bike, 29er,fully geared with XT gruppo for the same price, but with a Recon vs the Fox fork. I will eventually go to XT brakes.

Great SS package.

Pros:
Good Geometry, Good price value, Comfortable, Handles Well, Durable
Cons:
Best Uses:
Single Track, Trail Riding, Climbing, Descending
I've had the bike since May 2011. I'm a XC rider/racer who wanted to give single speeding and 29ers a go without breaking the bank. The Rig handles very well. I was amazed at the trail debris and obstacles I was able to roll over. This bike gave me a lot of confidence to descend fast. The components are nothing fancy but they get the job done. In the end, single speeding is about pedaling hard and having fun. This bike delivers!

2012 Rig

Pros:
Good Geometry, Comfortable, Handles Well, Agile, Durable, Lightweight
Cons:
Brakes
Best Uses:
Single Track, Climbing, Trail Riding, Smoking your buddies
I give this Rig 4.5 stars merely because the brakes are horrible. I ride a RumbleFish II (geared) so going from that bike to the Rig is an easy transition. I love the geometry and how it allows the rider to focus on his/her core riding skills. This bike is super fast and when I fly pass other riders, I hear them say, "is that guy riding a SS?" Yes I am and it's a Rig. The gear ratio is right on and fits well with the trails I typically ride. I am using the stock tire (tubeless) with low pressure (20 psi) and they handle much better than a tube set-up. Now for the brakes...change them immediately. You need plan your stops ahead of time and they will make noise during hard braking. For the price, you cant go wrong and the ascetics of the bike are dialed in.

This bike is great

Pros:
Durable, Comfortable, Handles Well, Lightweight, Good Geometry
Cons:
Handlebars, Uncomfortable Seat
Best Uses:
Urban Riding, Climbing, Trail Riding, Single Track
I switched the handlebars and added bar ends. Haven't had a long time yet but after a couple hundred miles I am loving this bike. I am able to better my times by a substantial amount over my two year old well equipped 26 inch bike. Love it so far don't see any problems so far.

Riding Single Speed is way fun

Pros:
Handles Well, Durable, Comfortable, Good Geometry
Cons:
Eccentric Bottom Bracket
Best Uses:
Trail Riding, Descending, Single Track, Climbing
I started riding SS (and the RIG) in 2010. SS riding in general is much more fun than a geared bike. There is no thought of shifting and the bike rides so quite. I love the quite sound of riding a SS on the trail. The Gary Fisher Rig is set very nice in teams of handling and geometry. I have a lot of confidence in cornering and handling on technical trails. I would recommend this bike and SS riding overall.

Not what Gary Fisher would have made..

Pros:
Sliding dropouts, Good Geometry, Great fork, Handles Well
Cons:
Frame design, Poor Components, Shift cable stops
Best Uses:
Single Track
I used to have a 2007 right with the EBB and I loved that bike except for the EBB. That thing would always slip. So when I needed a bigger frame I was glad to see for 2011 that the rig finally came with sliding dropouts. That is about the only good thing about the frame besides the fork that came with it. Some problems I have is that I don't know why they built a singlespeed frame with shift cable stops on the frame. Unless they plan to release a sliding dropout with a rear derailluer mount these are useless and ugly. Another problem they didn't send the correct stem with the frameset. I am really sad to see trek take over Gary Fisher and make dumb changes like this but hopefully for 2012 they make a singlespeed specific frame a real singlespeed specific frame.

simply excellent

Pros:
Handles Well
Cons:
Poor Components
Best Uses:
This is an amazing bike! There can't be a better performing single speed out there for the price! The only thing wrong with this bike is the rear hub is garbage. Seems to be a trend with a good majority of Bontrager hubs.

Had one since it came out!

Pros:
Durable, Comfortable, Good Geometry, Handles Well
Cons:
Integrated Headset, Poor Components
Best Uses:
Urban Riding, Climbing, Descending, Single Track, Trail Riding
First off, I want to say that I LOVE my Rig and use it for commuting, urban assaults, XC and everything else! That being said, I do not like the stock rear hub. I believe it to be a Formula with Bontrager markings (Formula makes parts for other companies) and this company does not make a very good freehub IMO. Also, while it is good that the EBB has been abandoned for slider drop-outs, the use of an integrated headset is a miss: if I cannot put my fifteen year-old King headset in a frame I am much less likely to purchase one for my personal use. I worked in shops for over a decade, am BBI certified and I have some strong opinions on bikes and parts, so these complaints may be unreasonable at this price point. Long story short, you will not find a better 29 SS at this price!

2009 Rig

Pros:
Comfortable, Good Geometry, Handles Well
Cons:
Poor Tires, EBB creaks like a banshee, Heavy
Best Uses:
Chequamegon 40, Single Track
Changed XDX tires to 29-0 -- better traction on sides. EBB needs frequent maintenance and eventually creaks/slips after all maintenance. Appears to be a BIG common issue.
