Safe, secure, and easy to use, the stylish Saris Thelma 2-Bike is the time-saving hitch rack you’re looking for. There’s no need to take your wheels off—the front gets strapped into the stiff crescent moon tray while the rear gets buckled down with Saris’ ratcheting strap. Your frame never comes in contact with the rack. The front wheel trays fold down so you can access your trunk, while the entire rack folds up out of the way when not in use. You’ll be able to carry all types of bikes—two of up to 35 pounds each. Plus, the rack itself only weighs 26 pounds, making it easy to take on and off.

Great Rack. Nice Design!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
Very functional rack with one exception... I find the plastic pressure detents for keeping the wheel arches away from the body when the rack is empty are not strong enough. Under the right conditions, they have worked their way forward and rubbed up against the paint of the rear hatch... this happens only if you happen to drive the car a bit without the bikes off and in the "folded up" position. Should be a simple fix, but an important one. Nothing worse than having the paint rubbed off your new vehicle because of a bike rack. Please fix!

Nice rack!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
Bikes fit great and seem very secure while travelling (other racks I've used dont seem to secure bikes as well). Also, you dont have to wrap the frame in cloth like i have with other racks (some press on the brake cables and can scratch the bike) since there is no frame contact.

This is a great bike rack. It holds the bikes securely without touching the frame. It is easy to load and unload the bikes. My only complaint is that I can't open the rear lift gate on my Subaru Outback when both of the bikes are on the rack. I would highly recommend this bike rack, it is well constructed and it is easy to use.

Saris thelma 2
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
Great rack. Easy installation. Good for smaller cars. I have Chevy Cruze. No rattling while on highway. Bikes will move a bit when driving but will not hit eachother. I use my saris bike lock and type around them to prevent it. You could use straps if it bothers you. I haven't though. Holds my mountain bike just fine. I have not takin it on long trip yet. Should be fine

Great rack!!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I bought this rack two years ago when I started riding and its still intact and working flawlessly. I own a Mazda 6 and it's light enough that I never remove it. I bought a Saris threaded locking pin that has also been on the car for two years through rain snow and really bad weather and it still locks and unlocks like new. The rack has a little more play then I'd like but I see it as the flex being exerted on the rack instead of the bikes wheel thus allowing the wheels to not be damaged when the wind is strong as the bikes will spay back and forth. I have had a 26 lb all mountain bike with 2.2 tires and a 35 lb downhill bike with 2.6 tires on the rack at the same time and although I had to let the air out of the front tire of the DH bike I drove for 2 1/2 hrs at 80mph and back. The rack never gave be a single problem. The paint on the main frame of the rack is holding up great and the rest of the rack is strong flexible plastic and is holding up great also. My only complaint with this rack is that the straps are a little to short but manageable. If this rack ever wears out I will probably get the same rack because it's AWESOME,EASY AND DURABLE!! And not super expensive. A couple other great things about this rack is that it literally only takes 15 seconds to load a bike up and you don't have to take the wheel off, clamp anything to the frame or mess around with skewer type locks like roof racks. My personal favorite things about this rack is that while everyone's bikes are leaned against a tree or there vehicles once they get it off the rack, this rack allows you to unstrap the bike and get ready while leaving the bike standing upright on the rack and then snatch it off at the last moment and take off. Forget to lube your chain or tighten something before a ride(as i have done)? leave the bike on the rack standing upright unstrapped ready to go while you go over all your bolts and lube your chain (rack also allows you to spin the crank while still on the rack)and then off you go. everywhere i go people walk over and ask 100 questions about the rack and tell me how cool it looks and how easy it seems to use once they see me unload/load my bike. I was once told it looks like something from mars! Want to bring your car through a car wash but have the rack on the back? I personally keep an electric impact gun (im a mechanic) with a 19mm socket to remove the threaded lock bolt. as i said i own a Mazda 6 and i am able to tightly fit the whole rack in my trunk with all my gear helmets and everything els in my truck shut the trunk and off i go through the car wash. The rack also comes with a 2 inch receiver adapter that only takes a min to attach with an allen bolt. I own 26in and 29in mountain bikes and a road bike and the rack accommodates all my bikes with no problem . sometime putting two bike on the rack is a little tricky trying to avoid handlebar/seat contact but a little bit of finesse usually gets the job done. Overall the price, design and user experience on this rack is great!! i definitely recommend this rack. if you are a DH rider or ride really heavy bike with wide tires i would look at another rack.

So easy to use!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
We've had our rack for about three years. It has really held up. Once you have the hitch, this rack is so easy to use! We don't forget how to install the rack or how to mount our bikes after a long winter, and no need for extra bungee cords. It just works. It is easy for a short 60 year old to mount her bike! Recently, I've had to be putting a wheelchair in and out of the back of our Prius while the bike rack is still on the car and it is so easy to swing it down to open the back and swing it back up. We've driven our bikes to the east coast and back no problem.

Love this rack!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I was at the Veloswap looking at this bike rack and literally 3 people walked up and told me they loved this rack. I thought the vendor must have bought them all beers! :) I got a really good deal. It is so lightweight that I don't feel like I'm losing on gas mileage. Occasionally I have a hard time lining up the pin that secures it in the upright position. Unfortunately, I backed into a fence and cracked the bottom tire holder, but it still holds my bike since the tire strap is in the upper piece.

A touch heavy / awkard form
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
The rack is heavy and awkward to lug around. The wheel cups are not clipped in and open and close when you pick it up and move around. I have a very small garage and its takes up a lot of room when stored. I was finally able to hang it from a hook. Stupid to have to use a wrench to secure it to hitch every time you put in on - I use it approx. 4 times a week. When flipped close the large plastic cups for the front wheel are not secure and bang on my bumper. Wheel straps are somewhat cheap and difficult to strap and unstrap. I regret the purchase.

This carrier is used to carry two road bikes and/or 1 hybrid. Easy to put the bike on; however, the straps are very poor, considering the cost of the product. I plan to put on secondary straps when carrying the bikes. My road bikes are too valuable to only used the supplied straps.

Best. Rack. Ever!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
It doesn`t get any easier than the Thelma 2! The dealer installed it within 40 minutes and it has been a snap to use...not too high to lift on heavier hybrids and safe for delicate carbon fibre roadie. Folds up quickly and snugly to trunk when not in use. Got the hang of it right away compared to many other models and brands I checked out (and Thelma was less expensive than most too!) Good idea to also get the lock as this rack would be tempting for someone to steal, it looks that good :-)

Almost perfect
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I think a person actually tried Thelma on a vehicle in real world conditions while developing it, due to its great performance (all my other rack systems did not seem to have this real world quality). Due to its light weight I wasn't sure it would be stable at freeway speed (I have a heavy foot). To my surprise it was more stable than my roof system (by another company) at real world speed 65-75mph. I had plan to keep both racks and compare Thelma with my old roof system, but after my first use, my old roof system was removed from my car and was sold. There are only three thing that keeps it from being perfect. First, I had to add 1 fender washer (1.25 x 3/8) between receiver and tilt shroud to make the fit tighter. Second, I had to add 1 thick nylon washer(5/8 x 3/8) to 3/8 bolt and nut, so the tilt covers would not rattle above 65mph. Third, the tab on the upper front wheel holder need to be larger to hold better when layed flat for folding up next to vehicle. And a added plus is my wife is able to easily load her own bike (second reason the old roof system was sold so quickly). It is nice to see a quality product "Made in America".

I ride 2 - 4 times a week and drive 10 - 50 miles to my ride start. The rack's fantastic. I feel totally safe keeping my high end carbon fiber frame bike on it or my low end mountain bike on it. East to put in and remove and EXTREMELY easy to put bike on. I've received many questions from folks in paring lots about the rack and I love showing off how great it is. Thelma-2 even accomodates a fatbike
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
FYI, I purchased our thelma 2 and raved over your product nearly 3 years ago ('10). Our thelma 2 is also being used to haul around my new "used" custom Mukluk. With drilled Darryls and White bros cf forks, it weighs 32 lbs. The front tire (husker du) inflated to 8 lbs of pressure, partially fits into the front tire "loader" when opened to fit a 29er wheel and the rear tire (surly larry 3.8) rests on the rear tire rest. Both wheels are fastened to the rack with stretchable black diamond snow ski straps (2 each). For a longer or rougher surface haul I'll switch to some heavier duty straps from the hardware store). If there is a 'next' thelma design revision, one might consider both front and rear tire plastic hardware to be wee bit wider (and longer wheel straps) but I thought I'd let you know that your sweet, little thelma is the most versatile rack on the planet fitting our road bikes, 26" wheeled-mtbs, downhill units, 29ers and even a fatbike (nice not to have to remove the front wheel and throw a muddy, icy and snowy bike inside our escape hybrid)! Now there is never a season that the Thelma isn't on one of our vehicles here in Colorful Colorado. thanks from Dave and Linda.

Awful Rack!
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
The Saris Thelma 2 Bike Rack was the biggest pain in the rear to even put together much less use it on my 4runner. You need a wrench, not that that's a big deal but, no where does it say that you'll need a wrench to put it on and off your hitch. The straps are not permanently attached to the rack, it was very unstable once I FINALLY put it together and put my mountain bike in the cradle. I was so frustrated I decided not to keep it and it was another pain to take the thing apart. I have a Saris Bones rack that I've had for nearly 7 years and that rack has been a dream...never an issue, and that is why I decided to go with Saris again. The Thelma hitch rack I would not recommend EVER. Sorry Saris!
We have an Equinox and when my husband plays golf it's better to remove the rack when loading his golf clubs. Because it's so easy to do it's not a problem.

Thelma 2
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
Thelma 2 is the second hitch mounted rack I've owned. It's exceptionally easy to use; my wife has no problem securing her road bike. The absence of a center post makes it easy to get things into and out of the back of our wagon. The front wheel holder keeps the bike standing upright with no assistance until the wheel straps are fastened. A great rack!

excellent design
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
Excellent design. Fit and finish is great. I especially like the no bikes touching and no wheels turning when car/truck is moving. The ability to use different size receivers allow me to use both my truck and car. My wife and I have Electra Townie 8i bikes. They have fenders. The front tire holder of the Thelma 2 is a very tight fit and scratched the edges of the fender. My solution is a cloth between the fender and the holder. This seems to take care of the problem. Easy to use
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
This rack was highly recommended at the bike shop that I purchased it from. I was not immediately convinced, as it seems "too light" to be sturdy. Initially, it seemed very wobbly, too. (I called customer service, left a message, and they called back within the hour with some tips that helped tighten things up.) After using the rack for a month or so, I'm very happy with it. Bikes are easy-on, easy-off. I'm a woman with average upper-body strength and have absolutely NO trouble taking the rack on & off of my vehicle, or adjusting it from "bike-carrying" mode to "storage-on-the-back-of-the vehicle" mode. (The rack easily folds up to take less space on back of vehicle when not hauling bikes.) I'm still a little uncertain about all of the plastic parts. They are seemingly sturdy, but I wonder how long they will last...? Good news is that the rack has a lifetime guarantee. The other good news (and a great selling point) is that it's made in the USA! (Right "next door" in Wisconsin!)

We love our Thelma 2
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I would only suggest these two: 1. Stowing instructions, in the up position, mention strapping the wheel holder so it doesn't move forward and bump the car. Why not develop a lock position for stowing or a additional strap on the unit supplied. 2. You should think about supplying one or two additional straps should 1 break so you can have a spare in the glovebox. They seem strong, but concern if they should break or be vandalized while in a lot.

Great Rack backed up by Great Service
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
This rack is easy to use. Placing a bike in it is fast and easy. Folding it up after riding is even easier. In fact I rarely take it off since the folded setting lets me open my rear hatch and it doesn't protrude very far beyond the rear bumper. If needed, removing it is easy and quick. It is plastic where plastic is good -- keeps the weight down and reduces parts that might corrode. Those parts that need it are metal. I've been using this rack for 5 years - it still works great and looks great. I wish every product I bought was such good value.

I've hauled a couple of bikes with mine, and it seems very stable, and easy to use. The only concern I have is how loose the central part - the plastic covers on each side - are. Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
For road bikes and my cyclocross bike, it's tough to beat. Holds the bikes solidly and with stability. Light and easy to attach or remove--takes less than a minute. Much easier to mount bikes than a rooftop rack. I was skeptical with the design, but it has proven to be one of the best racks I've ever used. At 70 mph the bikes sit quietly, without worry. So far I've found nothing about it that I don't like.

I always had a roof rack for my road bike, which, being short, was a challenge but doable. But my mountain bike is just that much heavier, that I couldn't manage it, especially after a tough ride with jello arms. The Thelma 2 is ridiculously easy and fast, yet folds up against my Outback when not in use. I can't speak to durability, since I've only had it a few weeks, but in that short time, I've been extremely happy with the convenience. The bike doesn't flop around, and 2 bikes, including my husband's 29er fit securely with no rubbing.

I have been using my Saris to haul two bikes back and forth from Lake Tahoe to San Diego. It works perfect for my little Toyota Yaris. A Saris on my Yaris. I use this rack in the receiver hitch of my Toyota Tacoma. The bikes fit great! I couldn't use my frame clamp type rack with both bikes in the house-hold because one has an oddly shaped top tube. This rack takes care of that and I now have a rack that will safely transport a carbon frame for my expected upgrade next season as this rack doesn't contact or clamp the frame.....which are no no's for carbon. Great construction, easy to use, and nice and sturdy.

Fits the Fit
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
This is my first bike rack. I searched high and low for a bike rack that would fit my Honda Fit. I had to use a hitch mounted rack due to the roof spoiler. I did not want to get a roof rack. I was not going to lift my bikes that high. I love how easy the bikes are to load on the Saris Thelma 2. We purchased two 26 in bikes. This rack will not work on the 700cm wheel. We tried, but the diameter of the wheel would not allow the bike to sit flush. This rack has a weight limit of 75lbs. Not really a problem, our bikes weigh about 34lbs each, and there are a lot of choices of bikes. The bikes are held by the wheels, so this rack is perfect for 'girl bikes' no adapter necessary. I purchased my hitch and had it professionally installed at a boat hitch place, cost for install was $80. I am so happy with the entire set up!

First Bike Rack
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
This is my first Saris bike rack and I will not buy any other brand from now on. Before purchasing the Thelma 2, I had to lay down the back seats of my Ford Escape and put my road bike in the back. I wanted a bike rack that would support the bike without touching the frame, because of frame rubbing issues. After asking around at my local bike shop, the Thelma 2 was highly recommended by the shop workers and a customer. I placed my order that day, and a week later I was walking out with my new rack. Installation was very easy and took approx. 30 minutes. The rack fits perfectly on my '08 Ford Escape. It securely holds my bike while driving, and when not in use, folds into a convenient storage mode. The best part of the rack is that it is MADE IN THE USA. I would have had no problem paying a bit more for a rack that was made in the USA, but this rack turned out to be one of the cheapest options. It's a great buy for the avid cyclist or a casual rider!

Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
This rack seems stable and beefy enough to support two mountain bikes or two lighter road bikes. It is easy to use, attaches firmly and seems very stable - we use on the back of a Wrangler and take it on some pretty rought roads! One issue we have: the width between the two bikes could be a bit greater. The handler bar and seat hights are approximately the same on both our mtn bikes. In order to keep the seats from rubbing on the bar/brake levers, we need to loosen and turn the seat(s). Other than that, it works well.

It was initially hard to get the bike in between the "guards" of the front wheel. I found that if you put the rear wheel in first and don't put the wheel guard all the way down, it works well. The straps were a little hard to pull through so I found that if you push down on the "gripper" for the strap while pushing it through it works well. Because it is a hitch rack and the way it is made you don't have to lift the bike very high which is good for those who are biking alone and don't have help lifting.

Nice rack
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
The biggest thing I find that it could use is a hole mid way on the rack part itself to put a cable lock around the bikes.... not all the way to the hitch pin. When driving, it does shake, and I did install it correctly. It wobbles at the tilting part.

Great rack - easy to use
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I use it on a 2008 prius. I did not want a roof or trunk mounted rack. After some searching I decided on the Thelma 2. Anyone can easily set the bikes in place and it's only half the weight of most of the other hitch racks. Assembly took a little over a half hour.Take a few extra seconds to work any slack out of the straps and there will be no movement of the bikes. Be sure to buy the locking hitch pin at the same time you buy the rack. You will need one that's threaded.

The Best

The straps used to secure bike to rack are a little cumbersome to use. They seem a little stiff, but with use, appear to be "wearing in".

Great new product. It takes me about 10 seconds to get a bike in the rack. With two bikes, they are stable and don't bounce around. The best buy yet. [...]

First bike rack I've ever owned.
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I've never owned a bike rack before but I've followed plenty of them down the highway. This rack is a great idea and seems to be working well for us so far. Easy to use, easy on and off, and seems to be fairly stable. We've used our rack about a half dozen times now with no serious problems. From my limited use, I have three recommendations. #1; buy two locks. Buy one lock to lock the rack to the car's hitch receiver, and buy a second cable lock to lock the bikes to the rack. Purchase both locks keyed the same and they will make the rack much easier and safer to use. #2; put a flat washer between the lock washer and your receiver hitch when you bolt the rack to the car. If not, you'll peal metal off your receiver. #3; don't be driving around with the rack empty and in the folded-up position. You'll just be turning yourself into ticket bait! The nice policeman wants to be able see your license plate. The fold-up feature is for parking lots only. So far I'm very pleased with the product and I think you will be too.

Protect your bikes...Buy this rack
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
The rack was easy to assemble. Took about 45 minutes. Not hard for me to put into receiver hitch, but awkward for my wife because of the weight. She was concerned that the bikes were not secure while we were driving. Stopped to check. Everything was OK. Just the looseness of the straps and hitch and rack accumulated to allow the bikes to move back and forth enough to appear unstable. I bought the rack to keep our bikes from contacting each other or contacting the car. They are properly secured so that this does not happen. My wife and I have carbon fiber road bikes and didn't want any chance of damaging them while transporting them. Bikes are easily put on the rack and easily removed. In my opinion this is the best rack on the market.

sweet girl Thelma 2
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
I've owned our Thelma "Lou" (a la Mayberrry and Barney Fife) for 3+ years. This rack is durable, easy to load bikes on, folds up nicely out of the way when not in use and once the winter snow is gone stays on our ford escape hybrid for 6-7 months (more aerodynamic with bikes on for improved mileage). I've taken bikes (both road and mtb) to CA from CO for the Markleeville and Mt. Shasta Super and only removed them from the rack once arriving at our destination. No worry about pebbles, debris from logging trucks or bugs hitting the bikes nor catching a cable. I hate having to take off front wheels, huffing it on the roof, trying to find a place for all of those loose front wheels and getting car dirt on the clothes when I catch a lift with someone with a roof top rack. As great as this rack is the customer service folks in Wisconsin are even better. In Taos someone backed into our rack (believe intentional and Bubba left without notice) and bent it up pretty badly. The Saris folks helped me out to provide replaceable parts at an extremely reasonable rate and shipped them out right away. I'm considering converting my 2 to a 3 bike system so that I can take both mtn and road bikes plus my wife's Kona to destinations for both road and mtn trips like to Fruita and CO national monument.two items of some concern-the straps (yes, another concerned user) are not long enough for my friends deeper dish road wheel set or mtb and I use bungie cords. Like other reviewers of the 3, I do use a shim in the 1 1/4" receiver to avoid rack sway.I wish Saris would make a Thelma compatible cover for bikes mounted on rack for those long trips in mud seasons.Overall, a sweet rack that just doesn't quit.

Best Bike Hauler Ever
Pros:
Cons:
Best Uses:
My wife and I use the Thelma 2 to haul our Specialized road bikes and I wouldn't own anything else. This carrier is light, easy to mount and easy to load the bikes on. Best of all the carrier never touches the frame so I don't have to worry about scratching the frame or crimping any of the cables. It's a great product and Saris customer support is excellent! I highly recommend this product.
