Description

Transport all types of bikes with Saris’ Freedom 2-Bike hitch rack. Its innovative design adjusts to fit most bikes and sizes, including kids’ and even some recumbents, thanks to the adjustability of its center upright support. It uses quick-adjust trays and ratcheting straps to secure two bikes of up to 35 pounds each, and loading is made easy by the low tray height. The center upright support even tilts down to allow trunk access. Plus, the rack itself only weighs 21 pounds, making it easy to take on and off.

Poorly designed rack

Only thing good is it is easy to assemble and install. I had a Thelma 2 which I really liked and someone drove into it and broke. I needed another rack and no Thelma 2's in stock. When I saw the Freedom 2 I thought it would be great as the clamps were all adjustable and I had trouble with the handlebar of one bike rubbing on the seat of the other so saw this as a solution. Wrong. I tried it with one bike and it was great. It may work well for two road bikes but is very poor for two hybrids. Have a small frame hybrid (my wife's) and a large frame (mine). The bikes fit too close together so it is hard to put on two bikes without playing with the cranks. I can't put on two bikes without removing the seat on mine, no way to adjust around it. One tire holder has a cut out for the strap, great design feature, the other three don't - mystery to me! So, I went from loving a Saris rack to being willing to return this in a heartbeat if the distributor didn't have a ridiculous 15% restocking fee and a no return policy on products that have been installed, which of course means no returns since you don't see the issues until after installation. They didn't say anything, saw it on the receipt after I ran into problems with the rack.

Had a trunk rack and decided to get a hitch rack. Best decision I made to switch. Seems to be more secure and easier to load the bikes and remove. Best of all can lock the bikes to the rack should I need to run into the store quickly. For the price of this rack you definitely can't go wrong.

I really am happy with my bike rack. It is very female friendly and I like that I can manage getting my bike on and off by myself. The rack itself is not too heavy making it a great fit for me. I definitely would recommend it!

Best Bike Rack Ever!

This style of rack is frankly the only type to use for carbon fiber framed bikes. The support is all under the tires. The upright attachment is just to keep the bike in the upright position. Just remember to always always always make sure the upright attachment is fastened, especially for the outside bike. Otherwise if you go down the road the outer bike could end up tipping and being dragged. Oops. I did that once. But that is on me, not the design. I can't tell you how many people have said to me that they love my bike rack and wish theirs was like mine. They love it almost as much as I do. Way to go Saris. Thanks to ACF for carrying a great American made product.

Of all the bike racks I have struggled with this is the first that holds the entire bike frame, tires et al firmly without any wobble or bumping into each other. It was the easiest to install, load and unload in 5 minutes tops! It is very sturdy while still being light enough to handle. I recommend it highly!

This rack rules! It works with mens, ladies, kids bikes- full suspension, no problem- fatbike- with adapter. Easy to install and remove (20 sec.) so others complaints about interference with liftgate not really an issue (pro tip** remove rack, open liftgate, put rack inside, go for ride- it fits in a prius!!)

This will hold most bikes on the market today. Now given that I don't own a fat bike I cannot speak for that! But I have had my TT bike on there, road bikes, Cruisers, MTN Bikes and they all work fine given that you can adjust the height for the clamps and the wheelbase. I would not trust any other bike rack to carry my pride and joy, so this is legit!! Oh also, since it is "hitch" based, it works on my car and on our family's truck.

I purchased this because two of my bikes have fenders and most racks won't work. It is very stable after the bike is secured, and it is lighter weight than many other racks I've used. The clamp that is shown attached to the downtube of bikes in the videos and photographs is secure once attached, but I had to improvise and clamp to the seat tube or top tube of bikes with water bottle racks mounted, making the attachment a bit awkward. Consider this when selecting a rack. It's not a deal killer, just a bit disappointing - would be OK the clamp was easier to adjust.

Great rack, but ...

It's a great rack, but it has its downfalls regarding fit on my vehicle. I have a Jeep Liberty with a spare tire mounted to the back. I can only put one bike on the rack since the spare tire is in the way. I also cannot open the back gate with the rack mounted. I have tried a hitch extender and it lets me mount a second bike, but I still can't open the gate. Besides the fit issues it's a super secure and easy to use rack. I have a roof rack and a different hitch rack if I need to carry multiple bikes.

Excellent rack. I prefer the racks that hold the bike up from the tires as opposed to the ones that hang the bike by the frame. Seems more secure to me and can accommodate various frame designs. So far I have had nothing but positive experiences with this rack and I am very happy with it.

Use for both mountain bikes and road bikes. Easily adjustable to fit any configuration of bike sizes and types. If I had a suggestion for Saris it would be that an additional 1/2" of space between the bikes would be welcomed - some combos take a bit of fiddling to make sure bikes aren't rubbing together. Super solid and secure, safe for carbon frames as the wheels are supported underneath - the frame clamp doesn't support the weight of the frame.

I use this rack for hauling all my bicycles from the road the fat tire and recumbent. Having the flexibility to change out the wheel holders relatively quickly makes changing bicycles a snap. Ride road with friends in the morning and fat tire in the evening.

Hitch bolt strips out threads of the hollow tube very easily. the walls of the tubing are too soft to hold up to rough roads and installing and uninstalling the rack

I had mistakenly purchased a Transit hitch bike rack first. It was overweight, and very unstable, meaning it and the bikes bounced a great deal while driving the car. Returned the Transit when it's hitch bolt started stripping. This Saris Freedom rack is so very much easier to bolt onto the hitch receiver. It's much more sturdy yet lighter than the inexpensive hitch racks out there. It's not overpriced and it really works well on my 2015 Chrysler 200 with he Chrysler bike receiver. Thank you Saris for making a quality product and backing it up with a great warranty.

Perfect for My Needs

This rack is for our Mazda CX-5 and it's a great fit. There are a total of 4 bikes that will be transported, either a road and commuter or two beach cruisers and it fits both well. The cruisers are definitely a little more difficult to put on but they do weigh about 10-15 pounds more than the other bikes. They were all stable on the rack, we even took it onto the freeway and they sat nice and stable. The size is perfect, I can pull it off of the car and put it in the back if I need to. It's also pretty easy to carry around when mounting and storing. It's a first for me and I'm pretty happy with my decision. This rack is perfect and I am confident it's going to get a lot of use from me and my husband.

I have a Townie bike that I love. This rack was perfect. My bike was easy to load into the rack and the rack adjusted to fit my bike perfectly. The rack does stick out... ie. It does not fold up...but I do not find that a burden as the ones that fold aren't as easy to use for my larger bike.

Perfect Fit for a Vintage Step Through Bike.

I researched quite a bit online for a hitch bicycle rack for our two Vintage English 3 Speeds. Each bicycle is heavy so I wanted a quality hitch. My Wife's 3 speed has a unique frame and none of the hitch racks I viewed seemed to be secure enough for her Step Through bicycle unless you purchased a top bar adapter. I didn't like the idea of spending more money, the extra time involved in putting the bar on, and a top bar was supposed to somehow be secure. That was until I found the Saris Freedom 2-Bike. I purchased this rack and the Saris hitch lock from our local bike shop which matched an on-line price. I have now owned this rack and hitch lock for a year now. We still love this rack. The Freedom 2-Bike holds both my Wife's Step Through Bicycle perfect as well as my own. The Cuscino's fit around the gear and brake cables as designed. The 2" receiver adapter fits snugly into my factory hitch. It would be great if Saris made this bicycle rack with a design that folded. I still get compliments on this American Made Hitch.

As others have posted, it's difficult to load the first bike which must be lifted over the stabilizing bar, and then when I did manage to place it, the brace doesn't fit because of the water bottle cage. Very poor design.

Well Designed, Light Weight and Easy To Use

This is by far the finest rack I have used. It is well designed and well make. It makes loading and transporting bikes so easy. As mentioned in a previous post, the yellow knobs are a little tight and don't turn easily for me, mainly because I have rheumatoid arthritis in my wrists. Spraying WD40 on the screw threads helps a fair amount. That is the only issue I had with the rack. However, I did make an inexpensive tool out of PVC pipe that solved that problem. I took a short threaded nipple and put it into a threaded "T" fitting. I then filed a slot in the end of the pipe to make room for the rack adjustment screw knobs. This gives you a lot more torque on the knob and eases the stress on my hands and wrists. The receiver adapter works fantastic and have no play in it at all. It is easy to screw the pin into it. Once tightened down with a box wrench it is very snug and won't move in the least.

Really like the rack. It holds the bikes firmly in place. There is little sway even with the 2" adaptor. The forward bike is harder to load because the upright downtube support is in the way especially if loading heavier mountain bikes. The forward bike is also hard to strap in because of the orientation of the strap releases. Loading the rear bike is a relative piece o' cake. The most aggravating issue was the two nuts for bolting the receiver bar bracket to the base were missing from the box! Then I find that Saris who touts their products as made in the U.S. uses METRIC nuts and bolts! Also the screw for the 2" adapter is not included, and is also METRIC! I have a whole drawer of U.S. nuts and bolts, but no metric! So trips to the local hardware store were necessary to complete assembly. Frustrating! Almost frustrating enough to give this a three star rating.

Like magic...once it's set up

I was looking for a lightweight rack that could hold two road bikes. One of the bikes has an oversize rectangular top tube that slants down a little, so a rack that hangs bikes was out. I was concerned by some reviews that said the Freedom didn't work with water bottle cages. I probably spent an hour setting up the rack so that the bikes didn't touch and the frame clamp cleared the water bottle cages. But eventually, both bikes fit really well. We drove to our ride and when we finished and got back to the car, the bikes went back on like magic. My wife was surprised that her bike was ready to strap on as soon as she got her bike touched the rack. A tip: use a socket wrench instead of a crescent wrench to tighten up the hitch pin...much faster.

I really wanted to like this rack but the fact that my bikes won't fit makes it difficult. The brackets for the wheels are excellent but the upper clamp is a terrible design. No matter how the clamps are adjusted, the upper clamp always hits the water bottle cage. Am I supposed to remove the cage every time I want to transport a bike?

I love how securely this rack holds the bikes. I switched from a top hanging style, and am do glad I did. I also picked up the locking lynch pin and the aluminum adapter for 2" hitches. I would definitely recommend both, particularly the aluminum adapter. Great rack at a competitive price!

I needed something to carry my new carbon fiber bike. I used to lay the aluminium one down in the bed of my truck. I didn't want to hang the bike so this one works well and I can open the tailgate by folding down the vertical support. Goes on and off pretty easy as well.

I decided to get back into biking a few years ago and wanted an easy to use bike rack to take our bikes camping when the car is filled with gear. I used it on both a standard size hitch with adjuster and a smaller hitch without adjuster and it was simple to install and sturdy. The bikes are strapped in there and I felt confident they would not fall off. I could easily wrap a standard bike lock through all the bikes at once and through the rack to secure them when we went places with the bikes. The hitch allows for a padlock so this thing can secure your bikes. The arm swivels down to the left or right and we could easily get in the back of my Chevy Equinox when the rack wad attached without bikes on it. The bikes do not move at all and the hitch has a tiny sway but it is very solidly attached to the car. Getting the rack on and off is a cinch.

I am not concerned about over tightening the aluminum frame of the bike with majority of the weight resting on the wheels and only a minor snug needed on the frame to keep it from tipping over. Saris Freedom hitch rack

I bought this rack a year ago when I bought another car. I got tired of taking the front tire off and lifting the bike on top of the car with the Yakima system. It would also drop dirt onto the roof. The Saris Freedom rack is so easy and convenient. No taking off wheels and having to reach up onto the top of the car! The price was also much less than their competitors hitch rack systems. The only thing it lacks is an integrated locking system for the bikes. A cable lock is easy enough to use instead. Love it!

With the addition of fat bike wheel holders, my Saris freedom securely holds my fat bike with 4.7" tires, my 29er, and my carbon road bike equally well. It's easy to adjust, easy to secure the bikes. I bought this rack a year ago for my new carbon bike and it has worked so well! I didn't like the idea of the bike hanging from the top tube so having the tray style was really nice. The only places the rack touches my bike are at the tires and the middle tube. I take extra care of my bike not to scratch it and the piece that touches the middle tube works perfectly for keeping my bike secure but not ruining the paint job. Overall the rack holds my bike very securely and I've never had to worry about it. The only thing that takes some getting used to is attaching the rack to the hitch- a socket wrench works best and it's a little awkward until you get it figured out.

I have really enjoyed this bike rack. The sizing can easily be modified for when I'm carrying different friends' bikes. Easy to load/unload and feels very secure; all while being lightweight and easy to leave attached to the car all the time. Plastic straps can at times be a bit unwieldy but hasn't been a major issue. Carries my carbon roadie as well as hardtail 29er with no problems and no scuffs/scratches. Lastly, a friend ran into the rack with his truck and broke one of the wheel holders. He called Saris and asked if they would sell him a replacement but they simply shipped him one for free. So customer service is outstanding as well. Truly satisfied with the product and would recommend it to anyone.

This rack is an improvement over the one I had before. [bikes hung from their top tube]. It holds the bikes more securely and easily adjusts for different sized frames. Very lightweight and easy to install. Suggestions for improvement: The plastic adaptor for the larger hitch does not stay put very well when installing. Make a piece that slides over and stays on. Put a nicer clamping system rather than the flimsy plastic.[holds the tires in place and the one for the frame]. It does take up a lot of floor space and does not hang easily. We bought the Freedom 2-Bike hitch rack about 6 months ago to carry either 2 women's mountain bikes (Liv Tempt 0 27.5 and a Cannondale Tango SL 3 29er) or our two women's Cannondale Quick flat bar hybrid bikes. The rack needs little adjustment between the two different types of frames. It is used on a 2013 Subaru Impreza Sport Premium with low ground clearance, and when fully loaded does not scrape the ground while driving on sometimes sketchy WV back roads. Weighing a little over 20lbs, the rack is still very stable and very easy to take on and off the car's hitch. I highly recommend lubing the rack insertion point prior to installation. This makes is much easier to slide the rack on and off the hitch. Additionally, make sure you insert the hitch bolt/pin from the left (driver's) side as this was not clear in the my installation instruction.

This model is not made to be used on an RV trailer. The company does not warranty damage to your bike when they are thrown off while on the highway - even two extra twist ties downs do not help, I'm speaking from personal experience. After the second time I used it I sold the unit for half of what I paid. Buyer beware.

First of all, let me say that I researched a ton of different racks before finally deciding on the Freedom. The ability to have a "tray style" rack at such a good price point was key for me. Plus I know Saris makes great stuff. In doing my research I've read a ton of reviews. So as part of my review I'll comment on the negative points I've read in other reviews. If you're reading this you may have read the same negatives I have, so let me address it for you. My qualifications: Cyclist for over 10 years and owner of numerous racks. One of the "One Star" reviews I've read states that the bike fell off on a curvy road. That has got to be operator error, plain and simple. I can not fathom how all 3 straps managed to fail at once. That just doesn't happen. "The cradles can't accommodate bikes with 'square' downtubes": My mountain bike has an incredibly large "square" shaped downtube and mine fits just fine WITH ROOM TO SPARE. I wonder what sort of bike this could be that doesn't fit. I'm certain the overwhelming majority of bikes will fit. Lots of people gripe that "the rack doesn't fold". It's pretty clear that it doesn't fold and you knew that when you bought it. Why give the rack a bad review based on your unrealistic expectations? That's like complaining that it doesn't hold more than 2 bikes. It's not a folding rack. Plain and simple. Don't expect it to. "The tightening knobs are hard to turn": I read that so I got my 9 year old daughter to try and she was able to tighten and loosen them. So I don't know how weak of an adult you have to be to not be able to do this. "I could not get my 2 carbon road bikes to fit because the handlebars hit no matter what": I think this is operator error too. They must've had them both facing the same direction because I got 2 mountain bikes with 31" wide handlebars to fit with no problems at all. "Does not work with 29ers": I loaded and carried two 29ers just fine. "Straps are cheap/Straps are plastic and I predict they will fail/Straps require 2 hands to operate/Straps are hard to operate": This is all just silly. Who "predicts" a strap will fail and then counts it against the rack? Based on what expertise are you basing this prediction? Plastic does not necessarily mean "cheap". I've had many racks with plastic straps that sat in the sun all the time and the straps never dried out, rotted or failed. The straps are incredibly easy to use -- again, I showed my 9 year old daughter how to use them ONE TIME and she was then able to operate the straps on her own. What kind of person expects to be able to operate retention straps with one hand? You can't really use a simple plastic ziptie with one hand so why would you expect to be able to do it with this? "The plastic straps scratched my bike's finish": Ya, that will happen when you strap down a dirty/gritty bike. That's not the rack's fault, that's the dirt and grit acting like sandpaper. Try a 10 second wipe down of the area or wrap a $1 microfiber cloth in between the bike and the strap to protect the finish. I have used this rack and have no problems. It is a great rack and a phenomenal value. It is easy to assemble and easy to use. Couple that with a lifetime warranty, made is the USA quality and easy to purchase accessories and spare parts and you have a 5 star winner. Buy with confidence.

I bought the Saris Freedom 2 for a few reasons. My bike has a step through frame so it doesn't work well on a rack where the bikes have to hang. Also my bike has fenders so I couldn't use a rack that clamps up over the wheel. This rack works perfectly for me. My bike sits in the supports, the upright cups the bottom of the down tube and nothing moves, it feels very solid. Another great thing about this rack is the weight. It feels very sturdy but it's light enough that I can install or remove it myself. I am so happy with this rack, I will absolutely recommend it to friends.

This is a good product, very sturdy and holds the bikes firmly without any wobble. However, I did return this rack, but only because it stuck so far from my car. I was concerned about parking or someone hitting it from behind when not in use. I found a rack that folds up against the back of my car when not in use. If the Saris had this feature, I would have kept it. So if this isn't an issue for you, don't hesitate to buy it. It's a good product.

I was in need of a hitch style platform rack which was budget friendly. I have a Saris Bones 3 Bike trunk mount, but had difficulty putting my son's 18" bike on the rack...especially driving 3,400 miles round trip. I decided after reading many reviews to look into this rack more. Unsure how it would the 18" bike would work, I took it to a bike shop that had a 4 bike version on display. Once the rack was adjusted property, his bike amazingly fit securely. There was a review that stated the rack could not accommodate different size bikes, well my son's 18" full suspension "style" bike from Toys r Us fit great. The trip went well even over the pothole filled interstates and highways of New England. The bikes never came loose or moved in any way. The gentleman's bike that fell off, must have been operator error. Oh an I use the 1 1/4" hitch on a Honda Civic with not issues.

Great Rack for Subaru Outback

I needed a rack that I would feel comfortable driving to/from New York to Florida. After much research and having a trailer hitch installed on my 2014 Subaru Outback, I chose the Saris Freedom 2 as it is ideal for carrying different types of bikes securely without concerns for scratching or damaging the bikes or your vehicle. The rack fits snugly into a 2 inch hitch using the provided adaptor. This was one specific concern I had. I wanted a 2 inch hitch for more flexibility and thought a bike rack built specifically for a 2 inch hitch would be more stable. However, I found the Freedom 2 mounts easily and securely. Be sure to tighten the hitch pin with a wrench. I also purchased the Saris locking hitch pin and use a Schlage locking cable to secure the bikes to my hitch. I realize these are just deterrents to theft but provides the security I primarily need. Most important the bikes can be loaded quickly and the ratchet straps minimize bike movement. The only additional feature I would have liked was having the rack fold up more when not in use. I added some yellow and black reflective tape to the rack to add visibility at night. I would certainly recommend this rack.

We bought our Freedom 2-bike about a month ago and it has performed well. Assemby was easy. It took a little time and a couple tries to find the best position (bike direction and wheel carrier postitions) for carrying the bikes. Now that we have the bike position on the rack set.... loading and unloading the bikes is easy. Mounting the rack on the truck and loading the bikes can be done in a few minutes. We just returned from a 800 mile trip and had no problems at all. The rack held steady and sturdy even over some pretty rough roads.

This was not the first rack that I thought I would buy but the sales rep at Bike Line pretty much sold me on it. The only downfall so far with this rack is that the directions aren't that clear so I had to go onto Youtube to figure out how to assemble and another video on how to load the bikes on. Once you work out the logistics and placement of the bikes, it's super simple to load on and off for each use. It also collapses so it can easily be stored when not in use and doesn't take up room in the garage.

Loading inside bike can be tough by yourself. Too bad the center support doesn't swing out instead of to the side. It has to be in the upright position before bike is set and it is in the way of the pedal. Other than that this is a well made carrier, no worries about bikes, they stay in place nicely. Besides that I am a big proponent of made in America, kudos to your team on an excellent product.

The 1 inch receiver is terrible. The 1" to 2" adapter is a pain to install and you need a wrench to bolt it down. There is not way to lock the 1" receiver to a 2" hitch. If I had known this I would not have bought it.

Takes very little time to install it to back of auto. Excellent design for securing the bikes on the rack. No movement. There is a swivel to the veritical components so you can access the back of an SUV, as example, without removing the rack, another favorable design consideration. The only initial challenge was the plastic insert for larger sized hitches. The plastic insert doesn't secure to the rack so if it falls off as you insert the post into the hitch it can be minor irritation. Ther Product came highly recommended from the bike dealership. They use the racks on their own vehicles so I got an immediate demonstration before purchase.

The assembly was easy, the hitch looked good on the back of my fifth wheel trailer, if it wasn't for someone passing me on the interstate I would have lost one new Trek bike. The strap on the upright came undone, the frame is scratched and the chain guard broke off. Strap came undone on a 2nd trip but a bunge cord saved the day. Look on Craig's list for this one!

Purchased this product based on price and reviews. The product has performed great. Just returned from a 5000 mile road trip, the freedom rack held two road bikes and was solid. I watched other vehicles go by and the bikes were swinging back and forth. This rack held the bikes solid and there was no movement. It was easy to use, easy to adjust and did not damage either bike. Before the trip I was concerned with losing some of the straps, I called customer service and they provided spare straps at no charge. That is great customer support after the sale.

A few things concerned me because of the lighter weight than other similar racks I looked at, but all seems to be well. There is a plastic adapter for the 2" receiver, but it is quite a heavy plastic, and the way it is designed it holds the rack quite firmly with virtually no swaying with bikes on. The tie-down straps are of plastic variety, but seem to do a good job and there is a lifetime warranty if they should fail. It takes a little trial and error to set the rack up for you bikes initially, but after that they go on relatively easy. The bikes are held securely with no frame to frame contact or taking off of any tires as on some style of racks. Over all I am quite satisfied with the rack and would recommend it to someone.

I tried a Yakima and a Thule and neither worked well with my setup. I have a large hybrid bike and my girlfriend has a much smaller one without a straight top tube. The adjustability of the Saris is great, no problem getting 2 different size bikes on there. The Saris is not super light, but still pretty easy to install. I take mine on and off rather than leave it on the SUV all the time, so a little bit of a hassle tightening and untightening that hitch bolt for each ride, but overall no big deal. The only thing I wish was different was that it had a built-in lock so I could lock it to the hitch of the vehicle, otherwise anyone with a wrench can remove it in less than a minute. Saris makes a locking hitchbolt but it will cost you another $35.99.

Prior to this rack I had a saris thelma. The thelma was wobbly so I purchased this one. Although I like the design and it is very stable, the tray knobs are almost impossible to turn (even with small fingers), the straps are cheap and hard to use, and the inside bike strap is turned the wrong way. Also, this rack does not fold up so I had to take it off to get the bike in the garage. My last comment is that it is really hard to put two different sized bikes on this rack. We have multiple bikes of different sizes and often I had to fiddle with the rack for 10-15 minutes to get the bikes to fit.

Great for 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse

This review is for my experience trying to fit a platform style hitch bike rack on my 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse. There are not many options for my vehicle. I was a runner and due to health issues, I will have to significantly cut back on my running for a while, so I thought I'd trying cycling recreationally. I love my car and cannot afford to buy another car just to haul the bike around to nearby trails. I have two daughters and a grandson who will join me. When all three go riding with me, we have a trunk rack for my older daughters' car. I needed a solution for my car when the my daughters car is in use. After several failed attempts to find a shop to install a receiver hitch, a local U-Haul dealer was able to install a 1 ¼" Class I hitch on my car. Once I knew this would be successful, I researched for many hours/days/weeks what type of hitch rack would be best for my vehicle I knew I wanted something as light as possible because I have lifting restrictions under 30 lbs for the rest of my life. All three of our bikes weigh less than 30 lbs. I wanted something heave duty that could possibly be transferred to another vehicle in the event I ever decided to get rid of mine. I also knew I wanted a platform style rack as I am not too fond of the trunk rack we have for the other car. As mentioned earlier, the rack had to be lightweight because of my lifting restrictions and I also wanted something that I could remove easily after every ride. I do not want a rack permanently attached to my car for fear of long term damage. I fell in love with the Kuat Sherpa. But shortly after I placed the order, I realized that there was not enough space between the back of the car and the closest point on the rack. I returned the Sherpa and purchased the Saris Freedom from a local bike shop. The Freedom does not seem as high quality as the Kuat which is only about 5 lbs heavier. The Freedom was super easy to assemble (took me 15 minutes ... and I'm a girly girl). It was also easy to mount to the car and only weighs 21-23 lbs depending on which site you get info from. I loaded one bike on the rack to see how easy it was. It fit great, but I am a bit worried about the center bar rubbing on the frames of the bikes, they have rubber coating which should prevent damage. The straps were a little tough to open and pull tight. They felt a little cheap and I worry that with the summer heat where I live it will make the plastic dry out and break. The Freedom does seem to have lots of plastic parts which make it look a little cheap which is why I gave the product 4 stars, but it definitely felt like a sturdy rack. I was not cleared by my doctor yet to go out for any exercise, so I am not sure how this will handle on the road. There is plenty of clearance between the car and the closest point of the rack and plenty of ground clearance. For any other Eclipse owners wondering, the center of the pin hole on the hitch to the back of the bumper is approximately 7 ¼" and from the bottom of the hitch to the ground is approximately 9 ¾"...this is approximate, my driveway is at a slight incline. This leaves very few options for light weight platform bike racks. In summary, this rack met my needs. It is lightweight at about 23 pounds. I can remove it from my car easily; it holds two bikes and seems to be sturdy enough for short trips around the city. If I have an opportunity, I will provide an update once I have been able to use it for a few months.

1. It was very easy to assemble from the box. I am not a mechanically inclined person, so if I say it was easy, then you know it's easy. 2. It is very easy to adjust the rack to fit any type of bike. See No. 1. 3. You don't have to buy and attach special bars to a ladies' bike like you do on most hitch racks. 4. The center stem folds down with little effort, so you can access a rear hatch-back door. 5. It is very light weight. I am a middle-aged, single woman, so I needed a rack that I could hold and attach to the hitch without any help. See No. 1. 6. It is easy to attach it to the hitch. See No. 1. 7. It fits snugly into a 2" hitch and doesn't wobble. 8. You don't have to lift the bikes up very far from the ground to place them in the rack. 9. The bikes sit nice and tight in the rack, so they travel securely and quietly. 10. The tie-down straps are simple to use (way better than those rubber things they use on most racks that are nearly impossible to stretch around to secure and even harder to get off). These tie-downs work kind of like a ski boot strap. Just pinch and release. In summary, it's a fantastic bike rack. However, I would say that in this price range, I think they should have included the hitch lock. Saris does make a hitch lock for this rack, but you have to buy it separately ($35). Because it's such a quality rack, I think it's a necessity to lock it on your car or it will very likely be stolen.

Nice lightweight design, I install as needed and throw in the back of the truck when not being used. I removed the tire straps, they are not needed. I did add my own safety strap, as I am a little nervous about one strap securing my expensive road bike, especially when the straps are not very heavy duty.

It took a bit of time to position the wheel supports to fit my bike, as well as securing the upright support to the down tube, but once I figured that out placing the bike on the rack was a snap. Biking around town

I was looking for something that I would be able to use on my own and this seemed to fit the bill. I am able to install it rather quickly (although at times that bolt feels miles long) and get the bike up. I sometimes have trouble getting the straps to ratchet down tight enough due to the odd angle and my lack of upper body strength - same goes with getting them un-done. Push the button and have to struggle with it before it comes free. I've had it for a few months and used it a few times (it is not on my car all the time) but it seems to do what I want/need it to.

Doesn't Work Well with Square Down Tubes

The rack is simply not made for mountain bikes. The center clamp for the down tube works best with bikes that have round tubes. Mountain bikes with square tubes do not sit in the clamp properly as it is not wide enough. This make a bad rubbing point for the clamp when you cinch the strap to the frame. Within a few uses the rubber on the clamp rubbed through creating a metal to metal contact to my bike frame nearly rubbing a hole through the aluminum. Talked to Saris and customer service was great. They gave me thicker padded clamp, however it is still not friendly to mountain bikes as it will eventually rub through again and is no wider for the clamp to sit flat against the down tube. The concept of the rack is great, however you would think the engineers at Saris would fix the problem with so many bikes having square down tubes these days. This rack needs major improvement for me to recommend anyone to purchase. I wouldn't consider this style of rack if you have a bike with square down tubes.

The Saris Freedom replaces a rack we had that hung the bikes from the top frame tube. Wheels on the bikes were closer to the ground and they weren't as secure. My wife bought a new "step through" bike so that rack won't work -- should have bought the Freedom in the first place. Very easy to install, bikes are very secure.

I bought this to transport my new carbon fiber MTB. I wanted something that didn't require removing the wheels, and that would accommodate odd frame shapes, this fits the bill nicely. I use it on my new Kia Soul and for such a light weight rack this thing feels bomb proof! I've only used it twice so far, but even at 60 mph it seems very sturdy and the bike didn't budge at all.

We chose Saris on the recommendation of our local bicycle shop. "It's well built by an American company; everyone seems happy – no complaints or returns." They went on to tell a story about a local school having come in second place in a contest that Saris was associated with. When the company learned that the school kids were so downhearted having lost by just a hair after working so hard, Saris allegedly contacted the school and worked out some type of solution that involved them heavily discounting a commercial bike rack as a consolation prize. I was sold. Third and best hitch rack we've purchased! We move it from car to car switching it out as number one against the others for long trips. Our summer bike trip from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia by way of Prince Edward Island and the Fundy Trail Parkway in New Brunswick would not have been possible without our Saris Freedom. And service . . . unparalleled! After being rear-ended on Thanksgiving, one wheel tray and one down tube bike holder didn't make it (my bumper made it through unscathed – perhaps a reason for keeping it on year round?). Saris sent the necessary parts and patiently talked me through installation step by step over the phone. How I wish there were more than 5 stars to award Saris!

I have an older 4-bike rack that is heavy and bulky and I don't like the way the bikes hang and swing around. My wife has a "girls" bike that has to go on at a 45 degree angle to fit. Made for Jeep Liberty? Really?

Only issued I had is that Saris said this bike rack would fit on my Jeep Liberty. When I got it home and put it in my receiver hitch it was 4 inches short hitting my rear tire. To remedy this problem I bought a extension for the hitch now it has enough clearance for the two bikes. Bikes are secure when on the rack and stable.

The Freedom Bike Rack is just that!

First of all, the Freedom can carry two bikes and they go on the rack very, VERY easily. The installation took all of five minutes since 99% of it is already assembled. You have a two inch hitch? No problem, since the Freedom has an adapter that will allow the rack to fit in a two inch opening. Easily to place it on my 2012 Chevy Equinow as well with removal.

I researched several brands of bicycle racks. I tried another brand with upper attachment arms with little success. On these types of racks, bikes were difficult to manipulate through the rack arms for mounting. The straps and devices to secure the bike did not adequately protect the bicycles from contacting one another or keep them stable. The Saris Freedom bike rack is light enough to carry with one hand and easily mounts to the receiver hitch with a through bolt tightening securely to the receiver. The wheels rest and strap to saddles while the cushioned mounts on the center post securely strap to the bicycle frame. The cushioned mounts are adjustable for differing types of frames including my wife's step through frame. The rack separates and protects the bicycles from scratches and movement. Mounting bikes and taking them off are a breeze (this feature sometimes influences the decision to ride or not). The rack also provides enough clearance to open the trunk of the vehicle. The Saris Company has done a nice job of designing a very convenient, protective and durable bicycle rack. My daughter and our friends have each purchased the same rack after seeing ours.

This rack has been worth every penny. I bought this from a local bike shop, and was immediately impressed by how easy it was to load my hybrid bike, and strap it down. The bike sits nice and high, and doesn't "wobble" or move at all. I use this rack on a Prius, which has pretty low ground clearance, and this rack is perfect because it sits up high off the ground. The straps take a couple times to get used to, but this isn't a negative (more of a learning curve).

The 2 inch hitch adapter that comes with this rack needs to be made of metal not plastic and should encompass the attachment completely on the rack, not just 75 percent around. Also, I didn't like that you need to use a rachett/wrench to attach the bike rack to my vehicle hitch, it would be much simplier to use a pin connector. But, the only way to do this is to buy an extending hitch adapter so you can use a regular pin connector. Also, once connected to my hitch the bike rack has movement in all directions, so I needed do make some type of shim to place between my hitch and the bike rack hitch connector in order to stop the movement. It needs to be made to fit vehicle hitches more tight, not so loose. Finally, the turn knobs that tighten the rack adjustments that hold your bike need to be made slightly larger for a better grip, for bigger hands and easier to turn. Overall, I still like the bike rack alot because it holds my bike very securely and doesn't scratch the finish or crimp any of the cables. I still recommend it for anyone reading this to buy the freedom rack, maybe in the future Saris will add and upgrade the improvements suggested or even come out with much better improvements.

Only gripe is the two straps for the tires are difficult to release. The ratchet mechanism flexes while you press on the lever so I need to squeeze a finger behind it to prevent it from flexing and moving when I press the release lever. It's difficult to say the least but better than having the bike fall off.

The rack and attached bikes are very stable, but I found it impossible to adjust the rack and secure the bikes without them rubbing seat-to-handle bar. Flat handle bars may work better than low road bike handle bars. With both bikes in place, I cannot open my hatchback completely; a minor annoyance.

I needed an affordable yet effective two bike carrier. I prefer the tray type carrier due to having a non-traditional frame style FS bike. The Saris Freedom 2 hits every requirement I was looking for in a bike carrier. The only place for improvement I can see is with the release clip the straps go through. They float to a degree and it can be difficult when trying to loosen the strap.

Excellent product. My wife and I use it every weekend to carry our mountain bikes to the trails. The bikes are easy to load and unload and I feel more confident with my bikes loaded on the Freedom, compared to my previous bike carrier. The only downside would be the need for some sort of protection from straps chafing the paint on the frame. A piece of soft cloth will help with that.

I use it for my 56cm carbon tri bike, mountain bike, and mine and my girlfriend's cruisers. It accomadates them all well, and switching back and forth is simple. I use the rack a couple times a week. Thought I'd leave it on the truck most of the time, but installing/removing is so easy I take it off when not in use. Love that it folds down so I can lower the tailgate. Also love that the rack sits lower than some, making it easy for this 5'4" woman to load and unload bikes. I'm curious to see how well the plastic straps hold up over the long haul, but so far I am extremely pleased!

The 2" hitch adaptor is plastic and does not stay in place when mounting. Had to purchase a real metal 1-1/4" to 2" adaptor from a hitch company for an additional $30. Otherwise it has been very easy for my wife to use on her own.

This rack works great for both road and mountain bikes. Took it on a 3000km road trip on my small car with two bikes, no issues at all. Used a small padlock to replace the cotter pin on the hitch bolt instead of trying to get a hold of the Saris locking bolt (difficult to get as I'm outside of the US, and this was also considerably cheaper). The rack fits in my car trunk for storage, although it does take up a lot of the space. With bikes loaded on the rack, my trunk opens easily with a road bike in the slot closest to the car, and is doable with a mountain bike - easy enough to get stuff in and out of the trunk. Requires a wrench to take the rack on and off but it only takes a couple of minutes - very easy to use. Great product.

We switch this rack between vehicles, very easy to do. I like the stability and security for our bikes and the fact it doesn't move around on the rear of the vehicle. The only complaints are the use of a threaded bolt to secure the rack to the hitch receiver so you need a wrench and thus the inability to put a lock on it. You have to buy a Saris special lock.

This is a nice rack. Probably one of the best things about it is that my girlfriend (5'0", 95 lbs.) can lift her bike onto/off of the rack and strap/unstrap it without any help. It holds the bikes securely with rubbery rests for the frame which seem like they shouldn't scratch the paint or anything. I wish the hitch arm wasn't quite as long so that the rack didn't stick out quite as far off the back of my vehicle, however some people will probably like this as it allows for very easy access to the trunk. I use this rack with a class I, 1 1/4" receiver on my '98 civic coupe and '09 BMW 135i.
