The 12th Annual Run N Ride for the Cure is coming up Sunday, June 5th and we need your help as a sponsor to raise money for the St John’s Cancer Support Fund.
Over the past eleven years we’ve raised over $85,000 and attracted 2,100 participants. All of the money raised has gone to local individuals and families facing financial difficulties as a result of their treatment for cancer. In addition, if the appropriate treatment (radiation therapy, for example) is not available through St. John’s these funds are available to help off-set travel expenses. The fund is set up within the St. John’s Medical Center Foundation. Judy Basye, director of the Oncology Department, administers the fund. Judy has indicated that the need is so great that each year’s funds are completely dispersed.
The fund’s revenue comes from three sources: company race sponsorship, entry fees and donations. 100% of all sponsorships, entry fees and donations are allocated to this fund! No “administrative fees”!
The Run N Ride is a duathlon—a 5 km run combined with a 15 km ride. The start - finish is located in beautiful Wilson, Wyoming. The course follows the scenic Fish Creek Road—a beautiful two-lane country road that winds north of Wilson. The race is an “out-and-back”—with the cycling leg following Fish Creek Road to its culmination, approximately 4 ½ miles north of Wilson. There are categories for everyone! In addition to individual categories for men and women, there are men’s and women’s team and mixed team categories. To top it off there are categories for teens —and young kids have their own shorter race course! You’d like to participate but don’t wish to race? No problem! There is a non-timed “fun” class! Lastly, this year’s race coincides with the National Cancer Survivor’s Day. There will be special recognition for those individuals who participate.

Looking for a place to ride this weekend? Fitzgerald’s mechanic Warren Ostler already scouted out a great option! Here’s what he has to say:
Do you wish it was early June and you were riding Putt Putt? Well in three short hours it could be. Last weekend I took scenic a drive through beautiful Idaho Falls to ride some dirt in Pocatello, and I was stoked I did. After reportedly raining all morning the skies cleared to reveal perfect dirt on the resilient City Creek Trail System. The trails that were below snow line, offered smooth flowy cross-country riding. The climbs are very manageable for early season legs (as well as single speeds) and the system is well marked and mapped making for a great day. In my shorts and Hawaiian shirt I was loving it for 3+ hours, easily looping back to the car for some left over French toast mid ride. Be wary of the wide range of trail users. I saw everything from grandma and her poodle to duel crown DH bikes, ti single speeds and Kmart specials. Bottom line… Yeah it’s kind of a long drive but what would you be doing if you stayed in Jackson this time of year? Must ride the 911 trail at least once when you’re there. Find directions on MTBR.

Your old man had you by the scruff of your neck. The wild road was in front of you - the same pavement that got your mother screaming at the top of her lungs every time you even looked at it. This time, however, you’re being forced to use it. “Keep your feet on the pedals!” What’s that all about, you just got used to them on the ground. “Keep going!” For the love of God - why must you be on this wheeled contraption? It’s a must? “I have to learn how to ride a bike?”
Luckily the old man knew when you were about to tumble, and caught you. Thanks guy. Naturally you try again. Works a little bit better this time. Might even try to pick up speed. The tables turned. The fear was gone. “Slow down!” Nope. The road was yours. And it would be forever. Peace!
I saw this going on today in my neighborhood, and it made me vividly remember my tale of learning how to ride on two wheels - what’s yours?
