Wow! Epic turnout for the TWC #1! Unfortunately I had to miss it due to a couldn’t miss birthday party, but as always, Dave Byers put on a fantastic event and posted all the results AND made a kick ass video highlighting the day. Check it all out here and get ready for #2 in March!

Snow Biking for the Rest of Us!

We’ve all heard about Jay & Tracy’s epic 1,100 mile snow bike rides in Alaska. And if you are trying to figure out the best methods to ride in -40F temperatures you need only to ask Dave Byers. But, if you’re like me (andy) - and you know you are never going to pass Beer League status in the Jackson Hole race circuit - there are great rides for us too! Here’s one:

Destination: Granite Hot Springs

Trailhead: Granite Hot Springs TH - 12 miles past Hoback Junction on US Highway 191

Gear List: Swimsuit, Pack Towel, Water, Food, Beer

This is a fantastic way to spend a day with a friend or loved one. Pick up a few bikes from Fitzy’s, grab a couple of sandwiches from Backcountry Provisions (they even have a veggie called the Hot Springs), snag a six pack - and jump in the car. It takes all of half an hour to get to the Granite Hot Springs TH. From there you enjoy a mellow 10 mile ride that takes a couple of hours, at a very leisurely, picture taking pace (it took us 2 hours and 15 minutes). They have everything you need - picnic tables, toilets, changing rooms and fantastic natural hot springs with unbelievable views. They do sell bottled water, if you need it. Soak in the hot springs for an hour or 2, enjoy a few brews, then have a blast on the downhill ride back to the car (took us an hour and a half). What’s nice about this ride is that the trails are well maintained and traveled. You are riding to a destination. And the return is downhill - all while choosing an eco-friendly alternative to a snow machine.

Costs per Person:

  • Snow Bike Rental - $39
  • Backcountry Provisions Sandwich - $8
  • Hot Springs Fee - $6
  • PBR - $3
  • TOTAL - $56 for a great day!

Great News from FoP for the New Year!

Excellent Pathway News Submitted by Friend’s of Pathways:
Today the Teton County Commissioners awarded the final major contract for the North 89 Pathway for the Gros Ventre Pathway Bridge installation. The contract went to low bidder Westwood Curtis Construction for $454,892. The County has previously awarded two other contracts to build the 6.1 mile pathway from the Town of Jackson to the Gros Ventre River, plus a separate contract to purchase the steel bridge parts.

Info about the 2011 Togwotee Winter Classic #1 and a new Snowbike Video!

Submitted by Dave Byers - Race Director:
After considering an Idaho location for Race #1 on Jan 8th, 2011, I have decided to stick with Togwotee Mountain Lodge as our race venue for both Togwotee Winter Classic races in 2011. The snowmobile trail grooming is simply more consistent at Togwotee than on the Idaho side of the Tetons and this gives us the best chance for rideable trails.

New for 2011, we will race the longer 31-Mile loop unless we get a ton of snow the night before the race.

Entry Fee: Free
Start / Finish: Togwotee Mountain Lodge
Registration: 50 Racer Limit, please send an email to reserve your spot
Awards: There may be a few raffle prizes and/or prizes. Most importantly, we will gather in the bar at Togwotee Lodge to relive the day’s glorious events immediately following the completion of the race.
Map of the area: Continental Divide Snowmobile Map

Course Route:
Start - Directly across the highway from Togwotee Lodge
CD Trail East
Right on V Trail (you will immediately push up a steep hill)
Left on K Trail
Right on CD Trail
Finish - Parking area directly across the highway from Togwotee Lodge

Togwotee Winter Classic!

135

Saturday, January 8th 2011 - 9:00 am

Togwotee Moutain Lodge

The 2011 Togwotee Winter Classic Race #1 is less than one week away! After strongly considering moving Race #1 to the Idaho side of the Tetons, I have decided that Togwotee Mountain Lodge’s consistent grooming program gives us our best chance for rideable condidtions. Idaho has great snow biking but the grooming can be hit or miss. New for 2011, we will race the 31-Mile loop utilizing the “K” Trail.

The Togwotee Winter Classic is a not-for-profit event and the entry fee is FREE. Wait, it gets better. There will be prizes from our sponsors Baffin Boots, and Fitzgerald’s Bicycles. Prizes at a FREE event? Yeah, we’re crazy like that.
If you are planning to attend the Togwotee Winter Classic this year, be sure to check the website for updates as we get closer to the event.

A couple of race reminders:
  • There will be no aid station on the course. Carry what you need.
  • Carry a headlamp & red tail light just in case
  • We will regroup for food and frosty adult beverages after the race in the bar at Togwotee Lodge
Please let know if you are planning to attend.
Thanks,
Dave Byers, Cycling Junkie
