So I'm out on the Roaster Ride this morning (Marin's version of Tuesday night) and out of the mob I hear "Fitzys!! Hey, you're Ian right?" This guy Andre recognized the kit from Lotoja! Now that we have outposts in Colorado and California, I think we need to look a bit further afield... Italy? IRELAND?? C'mon, folks. I think we need to send out a search for some serious investors to bankroll an international squad. |

Little TK was at a Cross Race and a guy came up to him and said, "Yeah Fitzy's, I knew you'd be here because it's snowing!" Then he guided him to teh start line and cheered him all the way to victory. Oh the fans.. |

OK...I can add to this. I was forced to miss the big cross weekend here in Boulder, do to a work trip. So I Googled cyclocross europe..and found a race in Switzerland on my free days. I drove to a remote part of Vermont like farm country, through a steady mist....fall colors waining....a cold wind blowing. It smelled like cross.....but alas, all I had was an arrow from map quest on a remote area of switzerland on a full european scale map. Needle in a haystack. Then, it dawned on my all i had was the name of the race...not the town. Lost on a sunday in the middle of nowhere, all shops closed, no swiss or german in my head....I drove my alpha romeo wagon further and faster....then, I was a sign...like an event, pointing up a back road. The sign was clear....it had a stick figure, with a tire infront of his chest and a top tube over it's shoulder. Jackpot....I might race today! After all, I brought shoes, pedals and my full fitzy kit. Could this be the teams first European race? No. But better yet...as I spotted the police directing traffic and a field a mile long full of cars and motor homes...then motor homes with names like Ridley, Robobank.....and other cross nations....I realized, this was big! I had just pulled into a stunning cow covered hillside setting, with hundreds of fans...at the U23 European Cross Championships. Ho-Lee-She OT, jackpot. I paid to get in...was awed by the hype and steep hillside covered with fans, cowbells ringing...and a muddy, off camber stripe stretching from the beer tent to the heated wedding tent that would host a beer party between each race (men's and women's). It was off the hook...like a mini tour de france moment in the mud. Thank god I had the fitzy jersey in my pocket...as here comes 6 drunk guys in laterhozen, hoisting metal beer filled backpacks with spigots, and cowbells that easily were bigger than a huge pumkin...that you wear over one shoulder and ring by moving your thigh..... again....the photo should sum it up. When you think there might be an epic cycling moment about to happen in life...grab the digi cam, and stuff your fitzy jersey in your pocket.
Finally, while waiting for my connection through Atlanta airport on my return, a guy on a cell phone stops and say's "hey, you know fitzy?" As I had my wool team jersey/sweater on...I was excited for a conversation.....but he kept walking and talking on his phone, after saying- "yeah, I rented a bike from him this summer...." I was a bit put off....till I realized I was in Atlanta....and not Victor or something.
Spread the message...............
ps. I just found out about Great Northern Cycleworks. Seems that Craig has a new shop in Whitefish....sh-t boyz....you best find out when their Tue. Night ride is and go up there and rumble like ol times! |

So, some guy claiming to hold the much sought after record for the Great Devide Race is featured in VeloNews......not a single mention of anyone in this sport he loves so much but himself.....a real hard headed type he calls himself...... Well, let's see how this guy feels after our Letter to the Editor campaign - asking "Who holds the much coveted Great Devide Record?" "Did nobody tell you a guy with lamb chops, feasting on ice cream and pie and sleeping with the remote control on his full belly, Shaaaattttttttttttterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeed your record this summer?"
Join me in a letter to the editor of VeloNews..saying, great peice on endurance riding and such....but where is the awe and the love of a guy named JP who bought his bike...........put down his drywalling tools for a two week vacation.....and left the startingline at a full 45 minute race pace....and didn't relent until two weeks later.
Shall we just go on record and and say- Fitzgerald's Bicycles Team's own version of Clubber Lang, will fight you anywhere, any time...for nothin'!!!
